Jeremy Duerr celebrates with family and friends in Alexander City after hearing had one the election.

Four hours after the polls closed, Jeremy Duerr finally took a sigh a relief and started hugging family and supporters. Duerr, a Democrat, will be the new district attorney from the Fifth

Judicial Circuit after staving off the GOP groundswell that followed Donald Trump Tuesday to edge Republican Bill Harris for the spot held by E. Paul Jones. To no one’s surprise, Donald Trump won Tallapoosa County and Alabama big and was on the verge of being declared the winner as of 1

a.m. Wednesday morning. Trump had sizable leads in popular and electoral vote totals. But locally, the talk was of Duerr who thanked those who stood behind him during the race. “Oh my gosh, thank you to everybody who has been with me, behind See ELECTION • Page 11

After early issues, vote is smooth By COREY ARWOOD Staff Writer

There were a few glitches in the voting process Tuesday in at least two of Tallapoosa County’s precincts, but county officials said the problems were addressed and few issues arose the rest of the day. Chief Probate Clerk Embirly Collum said the problems stemmed from voting machines in the Hillabbee and Eagle Creek precincts. “We’ve just had a few issues with a few machines saying there are multiple ballots,” said Collum early on Tuesday. She said there had been a large turnout of voters and long lines were reported from the 27 precincts throughout the county in the highly anticipated Election Day. The county board of registrars had issued numbers of a high registration rate of nearly 2000 voters who registered between April primaries and the October cutoff. Collum said the issues were quickly resolved, and described the problem to be essentially an inconvenience in the overall expediency of the process. See ISSUES • Page 2

A SOUPER ELECTION DAY

An Alexander City church held its second Election Day Luncheon Tuesday as part of a tradition to celebrate voters and offer a time away from politics with fellowship around homemade soup, cake and music. The United Methodist Women’s group of the First United Methodist Church of Alexander City served vegetable beef soup, cornbread and pound cake to the diners in the church. “We do it on a Election Day,” said UMW President Libby Forrester. “We encourage when they go to vote to just stop by the church and have some hot soup and cornbread and dessert,” said Libby Forrester, president of the UMW.

Jacob’s Ladder students had an election of their own. See how they voted and images from the event, Page 7.

Forrester said it was the fifth year for the event. It ran from about 11a.m. to 1:30 p.m. and Forrester said they had served about 200 takeouts all ready before noon, and about 100 diners before lunchtime had even technically begun. She said “all the ladies” of the church made the soup and the pound cakes and donated them to be sold to raise funds. Forrester said the money would go See SOUP • Page 11

Bloomberg piece features how city didn’t die with Russell’s exit

National magazine praises Alex City’s industrial resiliency The Lake Martin area and in particular Alexander City were recently heralded for what was described as their resiliency in maintaining manufacturing jobs amid a national trend of decline. Alex City was the primary focus of a Bloomberg report, “Where Manufacturing Isn’t Dead,” published Monday. The Executive Director of the Lake Martin Area Economic Development Authority, Don McClellan, was interviewed in part due to his time spent as Alex City mayor in the turbulent period that thousands lost jobs when a major employer relocated. McClellan was key however as well, because of his role founding the LMAEDA and attracting what was said in the article to be 16 new employers and 4000 new jobs to the area. He said while he did not agree with everything the author said it was much more positive than what he had expected. The Bloomberg piece focused on largely on the period of time that Russell Athletic Wear began downsizing around in the late ‘90s. McClellan said he was mayor from 19962004. Ultimately he said 6800 jobs were lost due to the move. “My whole premise was the community stuck together,” said McClellan. “We didn’t dry up and go away.” And after the loss of nearly 7,000 jobs McClellan said, “I think we’ve done pretty well.” At the time he said the beginnings of LMAEDA had begun reaching across counties from Tallapoosa to Coosa and working with Dadeville and Alex City to develop See INDUSTRY • Page 2
