State grants funds for Smith Mountain project By MITCH SNEED Editor

The Cherokee Ridge Alpine Trail Association has been awarded a grant from Alabama Department of Economic and Community Affairs to help make enhancements to the trails and the tower at Smith Mountain. Gov. Robert Bentley made the announcement of the grant Thursday morning. The $87,429 grant for Cherokee Ridge Alpine Trail Association was part of a package that includes

12 grants statewide that total $1.6 million. CRATA’s Jimmy Lanier knew the grant was possible, but was excited to hear that the announcement had been made. The funds will be used to improve trail signage, rebuild a building that was a forestry office that was originally constructed by the Civilian Conservation Corps at the foot of the tower for use as an educational center and expand the number of trails. “I think the funds will help us enhance the See GRANT • Page 9

The business license for a store in the Spring Hill community was revoked by the Alexander City Council Thursday after law enforcement officials again laid out evidence of alleged criminal activity around the store. Alexander City Police Chief Willie Robinson said that there had been numerous complaints of criminal activity ranging from drug activity, shots fired, fights and loitering. “I can’t tell you the number of complaints we’ve had and you all seen the videos and pictures we’ve shared with you,” Robinson said. “The area has become a nuisance and we are at a point where it has to be addressed.” The store’s business license is issued under the name CJ’s One Stop at 2202 County Road. Sunday morning, 28-year-old LaBrandon Lamar Herron of Kellyton was shot multiple times and died from his injuries. It is believed that Herron was actually See COUNCIL • Page 2

Birders looking to spy any of the hundreds of avian variations that call the habitats of Wind Creek State Park home have an additional resource in the form of a new informational panel unveiled Thursday. The panel highlights the park as a major area within the Piedmont Plateau Birding

Trail and the Alabama Birding Trails systems. There is a detailed map with legends that show where viewpoints of significance are scattered throughout Wind Creek and the multiple hiking trails that snake through the near 1400-acre lakeside area of the park. Wind Creek Project Manager Joanna

Representative Mark Tuggle stopped by the Alexander City Kiwanis Club meeting Thursday to give his thoughts on statewide constitutional amendments that are on next week’s ballot. Tuggle told the group he greatly supports Amendments 2, 8 and 14. “I firmly support 2, 8, and 14,” Tuggle said. Amendment 2 relates to keeping revenue within the state parks system. “No. 2 is an easy yes,” Tuggle explained. “There has been some stuff on the internet and social media from the former director of the state parks that does not like it. Tuggle thinks amendment 2 is not only beneficial to the parks

but to the areas surrounding the parks. “I have asked Greg Lein to put in more lodging – like cabins at Wind Creek,” Tuggle said. “He says why would I do that. We put them in and the legislature just takes the money. Y’all just sweep it out he says. I want them to be able to do everything they can to get people into the park. They pay a lodging tax that Alexander City benefits from. What No. 2 will do is change the constitution to allow the parks system to create an account to maintain up to $50 million that we cannot touch.” Tuggle also says it allows the parks to make better business decisions. It allows the parks to contract with business to bring more services to the parks and See TUGGLE • Page 9
