Suspect arrested for Spring Hill murder By MITCH SNEED Editor

Alexander City Police have arrested a suspect in a Sunday morning murder in the Spring Hill community. O’Hennessey Diomonta Wright, 18, of Alexander City was arrested early Tuesday morning and was charged with one count of murder and one count of attempted murder. Wright is accused of being the

shooter in an incident just after 3 a.m. Sunday morning where following an altercation, 28-yearold LaBrandon Lamar Herron of Kellyton was shot multiple times and died from his injuries. Alexander City Police Department Det. George Long said that there was a second person shot in the incident, which led to the attempted murder charge. That victim, whose name was not released, did not suffer life-threatening injuries and was

treated and released. Wright was transported to the Tallapoosa County Jail Tuesday morning. There was no information any future court dates, but Tallapoosa County Sheriff Jimmy Abbett confirmed that bond was set at $310,000. Chief Willie G. Robinson said that units were called to the 2100 block of County Road at 3:36 a.m. Sunday in reference to shots fired. When officers arrived they found

Herron, of Coosa County Road 91 in Kellyton, suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. He was later pronounced dead. “As far as a motive and any other details, the investigation is still in the preliminary stages,” Long said. “As the legal process moves forward, more details will emerge, but for now, we have an arrest.” Residents who live near the

Farmer’s drought aide program set next week

Renew Our Rivers event set for this weekend

By COREY ARWOOD Staff Writer

The best help for a farmer in a drought is rain but in its absence a program to help farmers successfully make it through the winter amid drought conditions is less than a week away. The Drought Management Meeting for Livestock Producers will be held at First Baptist Church of Dadeville, Nov. 7 at 6:30 p.m. The Alabama Cooperative Extension System’s Sarah Dickinson said the free meeting was offered to help producers in Tallapoosa County and the surrounding areas with the array of options and scenarios that face them in significant drought conditions. She said they would discuss strategies regarding the supplementation of hay for cattle from a limited supply and quality, and when or whether to plant winter crops “It’s so dry they haven’t been able to plant winter See FARMERS • Page A7

er Diana Jordan doing what she does best — make people laugh. The nationally renowned comedienne addressed a ballroom filled to capacity with more than 400 people, many of whom donned a boa, with a tongue in cheek look at daily life, aging and family. Jordan’s comedic bit was woven around a message that focused on cancer prevention, an issue that’s close to the six-year breast-cancer survivor. “It still freaks me out when I say that,” the 60-year-old said. Lake Martin Resource Association, Alabama Power Company, Russell Lands, TowBoat US-Lake Martin and Advanced Disposal are once again coordinating the annual “Renew our Rivers” cleanup of Lake Martin shoreline and adjacent roadways this weekend. The combined efforts of more than 300 volunteers removed more than nine tons of trash in 2015. Again this year, dumpsters will be located around the lake area and cleanup volunteers will be supplied with bags, pickers and safety vests. Volunteers can work independently to clean up lake areas and roadsides or sign up at a dumpster site for a cleanup assignment between 8 a.m. and 1 p.m. on both days of the annual effort. Collected trash can be dropped off at dumpster locations between 8 a.m. and 1 p.m. on Friday and Saturday during cleanup weekend. Volunteers dropping trash at dumpster sites will receive free T-shirts that were designed by a local elementary school student. Dumpsters will be located at Wind Creek State Park, the Kowaliga boat ramp and Singleton’s Blue Creek Marina. In the Real Island area, volunteers will have access to the dumpsters at Real Island Marina. See CLEANUP • Page A3

Gap Fellowship Church gets a new home By COREY ARWOOD Staff Writer

After nearly a decade a local church has moved only a short distance but a long way from its beginnings in a small storefront and parking lot it shared with local businesses, to their new large brick two-story building and chapel. The co-pastor of GAP Fellowship Church said it was a “wonderful opportunity” to expand their ministry. Marilyn Benson said they had been at their initial location on Rockford Highway for 17 years. Before that she said they started out meeting at the chamber of commerce building for about 3 years with the long serving pastor Lewis

Benson. She said they founded the church in Alex City. Now they meet every Sunday less than two-miles away on Robinson Court. And though their move was only a short distance away, she said there was a big difference in their new location at the old Robinson Memorial Presbyterian Church building. And the move was made just in time for their annual God’s Anointed People’s (GAP) Founder’s Day. “We are excited about it,” said Benson. “We’re just so grateful, it’s given us a wonderful opportunity to expand our ministry.” See MINISTRY • Page A3
