MOVING DAY Finley’s ethics
trial pushed back to 2018
STAFF REPORT TPI Staff
A former secretary for the Tallapoosa County Sheriff’s Office plead guilty to stealing thousands of dollars from the Alabama Jail Association while she served as secretary of that organization. Marianne Adams, former treasurer of the Alabama Jail Association, plead guilty for first-degree theft of an undetermined amount in excess of $5,000. Adams, a resident of Dadeville and a former secretary for the Tallapoosa County Sheriff’s Office, pleaded guilty Monday in Tallapoosa County Circuit Court. She was sentenced to three years, which was suspended for a term of three years of probation. She made an initial restitution payment of $5,000, with an additional amount to be determined at a restitution hearing on Jan. 8, 2018, according to a statement from the office of Alabama Attorney General Steve Marshall. The Attorney General’s Criminal Trials Division presented evidence to a grand jury that Adams used the Association’s checking account to pay for personal items and expenses, resulting in her indictment on Feb. 25, 2016. She was treasurer from 2004 to 2013. Her residence and full-time See THEFT • Page A3

A jury trial for former Camp Hill Police Chief Roosevelt Finley will apparently have to wait until the spring term. Finley, 58, of Opelika, is charged with seven counts of violation of ethics laws after an Alabama Ethics Commission investigation recommended criminal charges. He was arrested in March and released after posting a $100,000 property bond. Court records show that the trial was set to begin Monday, but Finley Jason Jackson, who represents Finley, and District Attorney Jeremy Duerr said the case is not among those that are likely to be tried this term. The campus of Russell Medical was abuzz with activity as crews moved fixtures and furniture, finished installation and minor construction details and did landscaping work at the new offices of Total Healthcare and Russell Medical’s new Urgent Care Facility. The ribbon will be cut on Thursday, so workers were on hand Tuesday to make sure everything will be perfect when the doors open. For more images, see Page A6 inside.
Thanksgiving holiday relatively safe across state STAFF REPORT TPI Staff
In the days leading up to and during this year’s Thanksgiving holiday travel period, the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency (ALEA) promoted #ArriveAliveAlabama – and it seems the motoring public took note. Alabama State Troopers investigated six traffic deaths – 10 fewer than during the same holiday period the previous year. There even were two zero-fatality days during the five-day weekend, which began at 12:01 a.m. See TRAFFIC • Page A3
Horseshoe Bend Military Park to hold Holiday Open House Saturday By DONALD CAMPBELL Staff Writer
Horseshoe Bend National Military Park in New Site will be holding its annual Holiday Open House event on Saturday, Dec. 9 from 6 until 9 p.m. The open house has been a popular event for a number of years, but the park is changing things up some and doing things a little differently for this year’s open house. “We will have rangers and volunteers sharing folktales and other stories around the campfire,” Lead Park Ranger Stacy Speas said. “We will also be offering a hayride for guests that night. In the past, the event has been more of an indoors thing, but this year, it’s more
outdoors.” The hayride will take guests on a slow trip around the park on the tour road, allowing them the chance to experience the battlefield at night, while Speas said visitors will also be welcome to share their own stories around the campfire behind the Visitors’ Center, so long as the tales were family friendly. “They can be family stories, folktales or even ghost stories, so long as they are appropriate for everybody,” Speas said. “It’s meant to be an informal gathering around the campfire where everyone shares stories and has a good time.” Even with the changes being made to the Holiday Open House at the
