WASHINGTON STREET TO GET TOTAL MAKEOVER

By MITCH SNEED Editor

It now appears that Washington Street will get a total makeover in the spring rather than just seeing a portion of the road paved as it was first planned. Alexander City Engineer and Public Works Director Gerard Brewer said that through funding from Alabama Transportation

Rehabilitation and Improvement Program, Washington Street will be paved from the city limits to the rail crossing near the former Russell Corp. headquarters building. But rather than having the project end where the state money does, city officials are now planning to pave the remaining portion of the road all the way to the traffic light where North Central

crosses Washington using the city’s funds Alexander City Road Improvement Project or ACRIP. “We kept looking at our options and we just feel like that makes the most sense,” Brower said. “We have the state doing that largest portion and it would be a shame to just do that and not finish it on into town. “So in looking at the projects See WASHINGTON • Page 3
