Given the latest terrorists threats around the world, sporting events including the Iron Bowl are on notice. Wednesday morning Auburn University’s athletics department announced it will heighten its security measures over the weekend when it plays host to what many call Alabama’s Super Bowl. Gates will open at its regular two and a half hours before kickoff to allow for a smooth ingress and

greater inspection of those entering Jordan-Hare Stadium. There will be a higher police presence at the stadium and around the stadium as well as an increased number of Vapor Wake dogs and K-9 units monitoring the stadium. “Safety is always the highest priority for major events on the Auburn University campus,” said City of Auburn Police Chief Paul Register in a press release. “However, with the sensitivity to world events and the expected increase in fans in attendance this weekend, additional precautions

are in effect this week for the Iron Bowl.” For those attending the game, fans can expect delays going through the ticket area. Bags which are larger than 12x12x12 are strictly prohibited. If possible, patrons should consider not bringing bags to the stadium. Fans entering the stadium without bags can utilize the express gates at Gate 2, 12A, 12C and 15. Additional security will be in place in the air with a state helicopter patrolling the air space around See SECURITY, Page 2

Tis the season for spending time with family and friends. Unfortunately, scammers are also at their height this time of year trying to take advantage of consumers’ spirit of giving. With this in mind, Attorney General Luther Strange would like to remind you of some recurring scams that often prey upon unsuspecting people during the Holidays. Scammers posing as family or friends needing help Someone may contact you by phone or email claiming a family member has been arrested or is incapacitated and needs money. The scammers will instruct you to wire cash or provide them with a prepaid card number. As a general rule you should never send money to anyone if you cannot verify their identity. Robert Bentley’s office issued on Tuesday. Wind Creek is one of four Alabama state parks and 10 towns and cities in

the state that will benefit from more than $700,000 in grant money aimed at improving recreation in the state. The park will receive a total of $51,750 through the grant. “Local parks and outdoor recreation facilities are vital to the well-being of communities, residents and visitors,” Bentley said. “Our parks provide places for families and friends to go outside, enjoy nature, participate in community See PLAYGROUND, Page 2

Legotrons, the Radney Elementary School After the Bell program’s fourth- through seventhgrade robotics team, placed third in the recent district competition at the Betty Carol Graham Center on the Central Alabama Community College campus here in Alexander City. About a dozen robotics teams from as far away as Mobile took part in the competition, according to Christie Broom, science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) instructor at Alexander City Middle School and coach of the Radney After the Bell robotics teams. “We are very excited about how we did in the district competition,” said Broom. “It’s always a lot of fun, but it’s more fun when you do well.” Legotrons was bested only by two teams from Montgomery’s Maxwell Air Force Base. “I think how we placed is pretty impressive when you consider the amount of time that the teams from Maxwell are able to put into their projects as compared to our doing all our work in just a few hours after school each day,” Broom said.
