County schools approve capital plan By COREY ARWOOD Staff Writer
Tallapoosa County School Board met for its annual meeting Tuesday where the board swore in a new member before deciding on a number of issues facing county schools and later addressed concerns of parents. Votes were taken on seven funds and facilities items, and five personnel decisions were approved. A Capital Improvement Plan was approved which had received attention in the past from board members
and the public in regards to the items on the plan and their placement in order of importance. However the board members discussed a revised plan Tuesday, which had placed improvements at Dadeville Elementary School at the top of the list regarding what project would receive funding among county schools. “I’m really pleased to see that the project we have for the elementary school is No. 1, because I just felt that was the best thing,” said board member Matilda Woodyard-Hamilton. The board chair asked if there were any questions
from other members regarding the plan, and the consensus was that the members present agreed the changes decided in recent work sessions were appropriate. Superintendent Joseph Windle was not at the meeting, however all five board members were. Talks at previous meetings had centered on what projects would receive precedence and funding when it were available. According to prior comments from Windle repairs to Dadeville Elementary School would be second See SCHOOL • Page 3

BLACK FRIDAY
Experts offer tips for shopping sales, Cyber Monday By DAVID GRANGER Staff Writer
The holiday shopping season is here and it kicks into a manic (for some) overdrive on Friday, better known over the past several years as “Black Friday,” a day when deals are plenty and frenzied shoppers, too. So what are some things the Black Friday shopper – and perhaps the shopper of the more newly named prime shopping
day, Cyber Monday, too – should know before they brave the crazed crowds or sit down at their keyboards to shop for those holiday treasures? WalletHub, a website “dedicated to helping people efficiently attain top WalletFitness™ so they may enjoy life instead of worrying about money,” asked several experts for their opinions and tips on holiday shopping, particularly on Black See SALES • Page 3
Black Friday is a shopper’s paradise that ranks annually as the busiest day of the year for retailers and the throngs mull through price-slashed merchandise, but to local law enforcement the swelled numbers means more cars on the streets and a higher potential for fender-benders. The increased volume that will occur during the holiday, especially on the major thoroughfare that runs through town, should trigger a response from the Alex City Police Department that intends to ensure safety and adherence to road rules. However local law enforcement will also be on the lookout for other types of criminal behavior. The Friday shopping bonanza will bring out the element of society that preys on the purchases and possessions of others. ACPD’s Lt. James Easterwood advised shoppers, “If you leave something in your vehicle place it in your trunk not in plain view.” See SHOPPERS • Page 3
Readers urged to practice safe food handling, prep work STAFF REPORT TPI Staff
This week millions of Americans will gather family and friends around the dinner table to give thanks. But for those preparing the meal, it can be a stressful time. Not to mention, for many it is the largest meal they have cooked all year, leaving plenty of room for mistakes that could cause foodborne illness. “Unsafe handling and undercooking of food can lead to serious foodborne illness,” said Al Almanza, deputy undersecretary for Food Safety at the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA). “Turkeys may contain Salmonella and Campylobacter,
