Denim and Diamonds Ball a big success By DONALD CAMPBELL Staff Writer
Nearly 150 guests filled the Rodeo Club in Dadeville Friday night for the sixth annual Denim and Diamonds Charity Ball. Sponsored by the Dadeville Chamber of Commerce as a fundraiser for the Lake Martin Area United Way, the night featured steak and baked potatoes from Poplar Dawgs, a silent auction with 52 wonderful items and the music of Lisa and the E-Lusion. “We do this every year for the Lake
Martin Area United Way,” Chamber President Michael Carter said. “It gives people the chance to get dressed up and have a little fun locally.” Among the multitude of items available at the silent auction included six tickets to the Troy game against Texas State, golf retreats from both StillWaters and Russell Lands, a case of wine from Hodges Vineyards, a miniature Red Bull refrigerator, a charcoal grill and a United States flag that flew over the Capitol Building in Washington, D.C. Tallapoosa County Revenue Commissioner Eva Middlebrooks said many residents don’t have a clear understanding of recent changes in property tax assessments as well as the upcoming vote on a proposed property tax increase for those with property in the Tallapoosa County School District. Thursday Middlebrooks talked to the Dadeville Kiwanis Club and tried to clear up some of the issues and misconceptions. “One of the big changes that was made in 2017 was the new manual the state put out,” she said. “Tallapoosa County was one of the first places the manual went into effect because the state thought this would be a good place to test it.” Middlebrooks explained how there were some property tax increases seen across the board, as well as the recent installation of mandatory fire fees in Union and East Tallassee to help support their local See TAX • Page A8
An 11-year-old Dadeville Elementary School student is not on campus after calling in a bomb threat to Dadeville High School last week. “He is presently suspended from school pending alterative placement Monday,” Tallapoosa County School Superintendent Joe Windle said at Monday’s board meeting while updating the board of the incident. “He called it in from the bus ride to school.” Windle explained the decision of what to do with the student’s education until a January court date will be decided Monday. “He could be placed in the alterative school (on the Dadeville campus),” Windle said. “We may provide homeschool services, either a teacher goes to his home some or our online school.” Law enforcement officials responded quickly to the potential threat at Dadeville High School Wednesday

Keebler Park rain garden construction begins By DONALD CAMPBELL Staff Writer
Eight students from Dadeville High School, representing the FFA, Key Club and Beta Club arrived at Keebler Park after school Thursday afternoon, joining local resident Dianna Porter and FFA Advisor Rollie Wright to help get the new rain garden ready for planting. Since bringing her initial thoughts before the Dadeville City Council during the July 25 council meeting, Porter has been coming up with plan after plan for how to transform the park into a beautiful space that could become a major showpiece for the city of Dadeville. Over the past month, these plans have begun to

bear fruit, as instructors from the Edward Bell Career Tech Center in Camp Hill brought a drone up to the park in order to take pictures of the park and get a better feel of its layout. However, Thursday marked the beginning of landscaping work being done, as Dadeville city employees did some digging at the rain garden site, preparing some dirt and a mound of mulch for planting. “It makes me feel very pleased,” Porter said as the students began spreading mulch and shaping the pile of dirt. “A lot of planning went into this. It makes me feel good that we have come this far and have this kind of involvement from the community and the See KEEBLER • Page A8
