Firefighters battle house fire that began in chimney By MITCH SNEED Editor
The Alexander City Fire Department was called to battle a house fire in below freezing temperatures Sunday evening. According to Alexander City Fire Department Chief Kem Jones, firefighters were called to a home 3017 North Central Road at about 9:30 p.m. after a fire in a chimney in the home spread to a wall and
into the attic. “The homeowner realized that he had a fire in the chimney and thought he had it out and went to take a shower before bed,” Jones said. “When he got out the fire had flared back up and was into a wall and the attic. When flames got into the attic, it spread quickly.” Firefighters responded quickly and were See FIRE • Page 3

City approves $60,000 in funds for Alex City Chamber’s new business incubator
By MITCH SNEED Editor
Alexander City now has an amended junk ordinance to hopefully speed the clean up of items that accumulate on parcels across the city and agreed to provide money to help the Alexander City Chamber of Commerce’s Lake Martin Innovation Center get up and running. Those two moves were among the items approved by the Alexander City City Council at its regular meeting Monday night. The move by the council on the junk ordinance cleans up language in the previous ordinance and will give residents just 14 days, rather than 30 before the city can take action on the situation. Also, much like the weed ordinance, it gives the city the power to clean up a situation if the owner doesn’t react and place a lien against the property. See COUNCIL • Page 9
