Playground unit coming to New Site By DONALD CAMPBELL Staff Writer

Residents of New Site may soon see a new addition in the open space next to the pavilion behind town hall. Behind the driving force of councilman Billy Daniel, the New Site Town Council approved a motion during Monday night’s meeting to purchase a playground set from Hammill Recreation, LLC of Concord, Alabama. The town will spend approximately $18,000 on purchasing the unit, but thanks to a grant received through the state government, New Site will be reimbursed $10,000, leaving the city paying around $8,000 when all is said and done. The motion did not come without a few questions raised, however. Councilman Toby Hanson asked if installing this would add to the town’s regular insurance payments. Mayor Phil Blasingame believed it would be covered with the sports park behind the fire department building. Police Chief Philip Weddle asked if there would be an issue with the playground when the pavilion had been rented, to which the mayor replied the town would be looking into the situation. Daniel made the motion to approve purchasing the unit and was seconded by councilman Mickey Carter. See EQUIPMENT • Page A5

The Alexander City Police Department is in the process of evaluating applicants to fill three open positions in its ranks and Chief Jay Turner said the number and quality of applicants has been impressive. The application period closed last Friday and Turner said that this week he and others in leadership positions have been conducting evaluations. He said that includes a review of their qualifications, a mandatory Basic Aptitude Test for noncertified applicants and a physical fitness test. “These are the first positions we’ve had since the state began requiring the Basic Aptitude Test,” Turner said. “It’s a test that tests basic knowledge critical thinking and deductive reasoning skills. It’s offered at Central Alabama Community College and there is a $45 fee to the applicants to take it. I was afraid that may deter some from applying, but that hasn’t been the case.” Turner said they had a mix of experienced and inexperienced applicants, but overall what is seeing has been a very solid group. Some of the applicants are already certified officers, Turner said. The first two days of the
