Mother to be sentenced today in son’s death By MITCH SNEED Editor
A woman found guilty of chemical endangerment of a child resulting in death late last month will learn her fate today. A jury found 33-year-old Bethany Brown Missildine guilty on Oct. 24 after testimony indicated that she left a potentially lethal dose of medicine she was taking to treat drug addiction on a dresser where her 3-yearMissildine old son could get to it. Sentencing is set this morning before Judge Ray Martin. The sentencing hearing had originally been set for Nov. 20, but was changed to accommodate the schedule of attorneys and prosecutors in the case. Missildine was taken into custody immediately after the verdict was announced, despite pleas from the defense team to allow her to remain on bond until the time of the sentencing. Local churches prep for community dinner By DONALD CAMPBELL Staff Writer
Thanksgiving is a time for families to come together and be thankful for what they have every day. For those in the community who may not have a family to gather with, there is a way they can still celebrate the holiday in a traditional manner. Several churches are working together to provide the community with a free Thanksgiving dinner Thursday from 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the lunchroom of Benjamin Russell High School. “River of Life oversees it, but five churches help with cooking and preparing food and several others have members who volunteer to serve,” River of Life Church Administrator Theresa Waldrop said. “It’s a big group effort.” Along with River of Life, Marshall Street Church of God, West End Church, Liberty Life Christian Center and Passion Church See DINNER • Page 3
Overturned semi scatters chickens on Cherokee Road By MITCH SNEED Editor
Chickens, feathers and manure were scattered over a 200-square-foot area after a tractor-trailer hauling broilers to be processed overturned just after 9 p.m. on Cherokee Road Wednesday evening. The accident occurred in an area just across from Benjamin Russell High School and in the front lawn of the Kenneth Ingram Law Offices. Officials say it appears the Freightliner truck came down the hill traveling eastbound and the load shifted as it went into the curve and started up the hill. The shift in weight caused the truck to flip onto its right side, sending the cages it was hauling to the ground and sent chickens flying into the air, into signs, bushes and all over the roadside. It didn’t appear that any of the chickens actually crossed the road. Pardon the pun. See CHICKENS • Page 3

ALEA Marine Patrol Chief Steve Thompson accepts a donation from the Lake Martin HOBO’s Gene Cody to the unit’s boat on Lake Martin.

The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency Marine Patrol Division received a new boat late in the summer to patrol the waters of Lake Martin. Now those patrols will be much safer due to a donation of a radar and compass unit from the Lake Martin Homeowners and Boat Owners Association (HOBOs). ALEA’s Charles Ward noted law enforcement needs partnerships like this to be effective. “This is a great day,” Ward said. “This partnership is great. Us in law enforcement realized a long time ago that we can’t do this by ourselves. It takes the partnership of all the state, county, city and federal law enforcement. But it also takes the partnerships with civilians. Ward noted the partnership with the HOBOs is the reason for celebration Thursday. “That is the reason why we are here,” Ward explained. “It is the Homeowners and Boat Owners Association purchasing equipment that we can use to work more efficient.” See DONATION • Page 7
