During a special meeting of the Tallapoosa County Board of Education Tuesday morning, the board approved appointing Betty Carol Graham to fill the seat recently vacated by Randy

Anderson. “We had two very good candidates to pick from,” Board Chairman Martin Johnson said, while Vice-Chairman Michael Carter said after the meeting it was a very difficult decision to reach. Graham is no stranger to the field of public service, and

John Kendrick grew up around cotton and decided at the age of 76 he wanted to raise one last crop of cotton. Doing it the old-fashioned way, the farmer who lives between Alexander City and Hackneyville has grown some of the prettiest cotton around and is ready to take it to the gin.

Kendrick goes back in time to produce one last bale of cotton By MITCH SNEED Editor

If you look up the term “old school,” it would be fitting to see a picture of John Kendrick next to the definition “someone or something that is old-fashioned or traditional.” Kendrick has been farming a

patch of hilly land on Highway 63 North between Alexander City and Hackneyville for more than 50 years. From his faded Liberty bibbed overalls, to his hands that are weathered from decades of working in the red dirt – there’s not much fancy about Kendrick. He built a replica of

the farmhouse where he grew up in Chambers County by hand, complete with a wood cook stove, rock fireplace and cardboard insulation. Sitting in a cane-backed rocker on the front porch of that little house with two No. 2 galvanized washtubs See COTTON • Page A8
