Broad Street project entering final stages By MITCH SNEED Editor

No matter where you look around Alexander City, it appears that work is going on everywhere. Several projects are in full swing and behind the scenes the stage is being set for some big happenings that will take shape beginning early next year. One of the hotbeds of activity in the

downtown area is in and around Broad Street Plaza. Alexander City’s Broad Street Streetscape project began in June and is entering its final stages. The project will result in further beautification of the Broad Street corridor with the installation of new sidewalks, speed breaks, landscaping and repaving and restriping of the parking lot and spaces north of Broad Street

between Clay and Green Streets. Most of the concrete and sidewalk work is complete, islands have had irrigation installed and sod has been put in place. The Alexander City City Council approved a $15,000 addition to the bid on Monday night to provide additional material to level the parking lot. Local contractor Henderson and See PROJECT • Page 6

The Alexander City Civitan Club is looking to reorganize and held another meeting Thursday. The group is not yet re-chartered but already has several service projects in mind. “Next weekend we have a service project at Outdoor Friends Forever,” Reuben Prater said. “They will have about 14 kids and their families there. We are going to help serve lunch.” Prater brought up another service project through Meals on Wheels. “We can do some gift bags,” Prater said. “They give them to their clients who are shut ins and can’t get out.” Prater explained that the items are left up to them but could include healthy snacks, socks and other items needed by the group.
