Alexander City and the Lake Martin community were treated to a show of military force Friday afternoon as a pair of Marine fighter jets did a flyover as part of routine training. Two F18Ds from Marine Corps Air Station in Beaufort, South Carolina made a routine training run over the lake on what is called a VR route. The area was in the flight pattern for about 10

minutes at about 4 p.m. and had people stopping roadside, looking skyward from their boats and had others in areas around the airport standing with dropped jaws as they saw the impressive sight. “It was awesome,” said 13-year-old Victor Falcon who stopped with his family at the old Lake Hill Restaurant just in time to see the jets. “They sounded like a bomb when they flew by. Council to meet with AC School Board hopefuls

The Alexander City City Council will interview candidates Monday for a soon-to-be open seat on the Alexander City Board of Education. Five candidates have applied to fill the seat that is being vacated by Steve Robinson. He opted to step down due to obligations with the Tallapoosa County Board of Commissioners and “to open the door to others interested in serving.” The interviews are set to begin at 4 p.m. on Monday, with each candidate scheduled for 30-minute sessions. SURVIVORS CELEBRATE Hundreds took part in the Lake Martin area Relay for Life event Friday at the Sportplex. Cancer survivors celebrated life with family, friends and caretakers and shared happy moments together like survivors Molly Barrett, bottom left, Sherry Pritchard and Mae Lynn O’Neil.

Progress. That’s the way Alexander City Council President Jim Spann characterized Thursday night’s closed door session that was designed to clear the air. All six city council members as well as Mayor Charles Shaw met with Alexander City Methodist Church minister Bro. Wayne Cowhick in an effort to get back recent troubles, which included a postmeeting physical fight between Shaw and Councilman Tony Goss that resulted in the arrest of the mayor and his wife Lavern. “I think we made some headway,” Spann said. “It was training, on ways that we can get past some of this stuff. Obviously, we didn’t solve it all, but there was some progress made.” Spann said that the recent confrontations and the lasting impact that has had still lingered, but he said that they talked about it head on. “Some of those that were involved in those confrontations, well, they have a See COUNCIL • Page 3

City gymnastics equiment fetches $25,040 at auction

The city of Alexander City will receive $25,040 for surplus gymnastics equipment was auctioned in online bidding. After debate during three city council meetings over equipment that had been used in the city’s gymnastics program and in a building that the city rented to an individual, the

items were placed on governmentdeals.com. An Auburn woman who operates two gymnastics studios agreed to pay $28,000 for the equipment, and after the buyer’s premium was taken, the city will receive $25,040. “For the city, the name of the game is consistency,” said city purchasing agent Miles Hamlet. “Going though governmentdeals.com See AUCTION • Page 11

First Strand Session draws a large crowd Over 200 people took advantage of the cool weather Thursday evening to socialize and hear tunes from Dallas Dorsey. The event organized by the Lake Martin Young Professionals is will happen again on the first Thursday of every month through out the summer months.
