City council approves water tower purchase Study of former Russell Main Office also given thumbs up
By MITCH SNEED Editor
Money was approved to do an architectural study on the former Russell Main Office building and to complete a deal that will make the familiar checkerboard water tower and the property it sits on belong to the city at Monday’s meeting of the Alexander City City Council. The city now owns the former Russell Main Office. Over the years, a number of issues have developed with
the structure. A portion of the building had a tenant, but currently it is not occupied. Mayor Jim Nabors said the study was needed to see what if any use the building may now have. “This is to see what is need and if or what portion is usable,” Nabors said. “If it is salvageable, we need an idea of what it may cost to rectify any issues.” The council voted 4-0 to approve a $7,500 expenditure to Stacy Norman Architects to study “the condition See COUNCIL • Page 3

Investigators with the Alexander City Police Department are looking into Saturday night shooting that left one man suffering from non-life-threatening injuries. Alexander City Police Chief Jay Turner confirmed that officers were called to a residence on I Street late Saturday evening. “When officers arrived they found one man injured,” Turner said. “Initially we got some conflicting reports as to exactly what happened. Investigators are still actively working the case to sort through the information and taking more statements to see if they can get to the bottom of it.” It was learned from interviews that the victim was actually shot at a Booker Street residence by a man that was known to him. Investigators have identified a suspect and could be seeking a warrant on attempted murder charges, according to Deputy Police Chief James Easterwood.

Residents brought unwanted and expired medication by the bagful to Walgreens in Alexander City Saturday, serving two important purposes. Residents were able to safely dispose of medication and keep it out of the area water supply by bringing medication to the Drug Take-Back Day event. It also was a great way to make sure that it didn’t wind up in the wrong hands. “We’ve been doing in this for a number of years and the response is always good,” Tallapoosa County Sheriff Jimmy Abbett See DRUGS • Page 3
