Volunteer fire departments play a vital role in small towns and communities who may be unable to hire a fulltime professional force of firefighters. Hackneyville is no exception to this, with their volunteer department serving the needs of the community, as well as working in conjunction with other local fire departments whenever necessary. To help raise the money to keep the force operating, the Hackneyville Volunteer Fire Department will be having their annual fish fry from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, May 13 at the fire station. “We’ve had this event for a long time, around 20 years, though it may have been going on even See HVFD • Page 3

Some of the best backyard cooks in Alabama – including some from here in Alexander City – will be on hand Saturday at the Lake Martin Amphitheatre to compete in the Lake Martin Chapter of the Alabama Wildlife Federation’s Wild Game Cook-Off. Cooks compete in three divisions – fish, fowl and game. First-, secondand third-place are awarded in each division. There is also a best overall award, an award for best presentation and a people’s choice award voted on by the attendees. Local cook teams Smokin’ & Jokin’ BBQ will be participating in the cookoff, which amounts to a “home game” for the them. Smokin’ & Jokin’ is a past state AWF Cook-Off champion. Chonita’s Cookers, another local cook-off power that won the state AWF title in 2014, and have already secured a spot in the state finals, will be on hand. The team is led by Mark and Severa McGrady. The auditorium in the Graham Technology Center on CACC’s campus was filled to capacity, with every seat taken. An overflow crowd lined the hallway walls and spilled into the large room at the other end of the building, listening to the ceremony over the center’s broadcast system. Thursday morning’s graduation ceremony marked the completion of degree and certificates for CACC students pursuing careers in a wide range of fields, while the afternoon pinning ceremony signaled the culmination of a long and difficult road for the students working to become the newest group of trained

nurses. “There were 200 students who received degrees, awards and certificates,” said CACC President Dr. Susan Burrow. “This includes the nursing students getting pinned this afternoon.” Of the 200 who graduated, 97 walked during the morning graduation, while 15 were pinned on Thursday afternoon, according to Burrow. What makes this number impressive is that it marks yet another steady increase in the number of CACC students who finish their degree work at the college and move on to the next step in their life, be that transferring to a four-year institution or going straight into the workforce.
