New Site closer to answer on Sr. Center By CLIFF WILLIAMS Staff Writer

The New Site Town Council learned at Monday night’s meeting it is closer to being able to advertise jobs in the police department and may have a solution to the high cost of a new senior center. “We were able to get some job descriptions and fit them to our needs,” Councilmember Michael East said. “We were able to find them in Alexander City.” East wanted councilmembers to read over the job descriptions and be prepared to vote on them at the next See COUNCIL • Page 6

Donation helps make new batting cages possible By CLIFF WILLIAMS Staff Writer

New Site youth now have new batting practice facilities thanks to donations from the town and from a Tallapoosa County commissioner. “The town had built a freestanding building,” Chris Brown, president of New Site Youth Sports said. “Then John McKelvey and the commission stepped in with a $4,000 donation and

did some other work too.” Brown explained the old batting cage was small and had limited uses. “It was old and little,” Brown said. “It only had two 25-foot lanes.” Brown said the donation from McKelvey and the commission completed the building from the city. “With the donation, See CAGES • Page 3

With technology and advances in equipment, the task of putting a new layer of asphalt on a road is often handled very quickly. So when officials send advance warning to let residents know that a major project is coming, it’s a good idea to take notice. Consider this your warning. CACC officials see positive signs in audit findings By MITCH SNEED Editor

The Town of New Site recently constructed a new batting cage for youth thanks to the help of the town and a donation from County Commissioner John McKelvey.

While Alexander City-based Central Alabama Community College had an overall favorable bill of health in a recently released audit, the school paid $100,914 in penalties and interest last fiscal year for failure to submit employees’ taxes on time in previous years, an issue that officials say has been addressed. Volunteers needed for Saturday Trash Walk By MITCH SNEED Editor

Submitted / The Outlook

This pile of trash was picked up along Elkahatchee Road by Trash Walk organizer John Thompson.

Call it roadside spring-cleaning or a chance to help get the area ready for warm weather visitors. No matter what you call it, this Saturday PATH and the Lake Martin Resource Association are seeking volunteers to help cleanup trash and discarded items in several areas in the community. The March PATH Trash Walk is scheduled for Saturday, March 11. “We will meet at the entrance to Kenneth Boones’ property located at 4294 Elkahatchee Road which is

the first drive south of the spillway on Elkahatchee Creek,” Thompson said. “We will meet between 8 and 8:30 a.m. to receive supplies and assignments and enjoy a light breakfast.” From there volunteers will fan out to several surrounding areas to help clean up roadways and other areas that seem to college items. “We plan to clean Elkahatchee Road from Highway 280 to Our Town on Highway 63,” Thompson said. “The cleanup will conclude at noon and volunteers are invited to a cookout hosted by Kenneth and Mary Lyman on Russell Pond.”

Thompson said he saw firsthand that the area is in need. “We were driving that area just a little while ago and saw that someone had a mattress out there for us, a tire and then all the stuff that you see in that picture,” Thompson said. “At this time of the year you have fishing tournaments coming in, the boat show and so many people visiting our area. That’s when you really want to put your best foot forward and make sure that the roads are cleaned up. “But from the looks of it some folks don’t subscribe to that way of thinking.”
