Mrs. Prophitt was a very loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She enjoyed tending to her flowers, listening to the Gaither Vocal Band and spending time with her family. For several years she and her husband owned Billy’s One Stop where she would visit with the patrons

and enjoy hours of conversation.

A federal judge in Georgia has found in favor of law enforcement and the Tallapoosa County Sheriff’s Department deputy who fired the shots that claimed the life of a mentally challenged Dadeville man in 2015.

embers of Mt. Zion Baptist Church near Wind Creek State Park gathered in front of the church Friday, remembering the sacrifice Jesus made on the cross by holding their annual re-enactment of the crucifixion.

“Jesus” and “the thieves” were hung on display, while two more members dressed as Roman soldiers and stood guard and other church members gathered to observe and mourn.

“This is our third year of doing this,” Mt. Zion pastor Wayne Wright said. “We felt like the Lord led us to do this. We wanted people to get an idea of what it would have been like for Jesus to go through that.”

Once the participants were up on the cross, the Roman guards were walking their post and the mourners were on their knees in front of the crosses, some cars passing by the church on Highway 63 slowed down to take a look, while others pulled into the parking lot, got out of their vehicles and asked questions about what was going on. One or two cars pulled into an open spot across the street and simply watched the proceedings for several minutes.

Rasbury named finalist for teacher hall of fame

The man accused of the 2015 murders of a brother and sister he shared a mobile home with in the Goldville community appears to be set for an April trial in Tallapoosa County Court in Alexander City.

Dean Carl Stevens, 53, is facing two counts of capital murder in the shooting deaths of Dianna Mitchell Sharpe, 48, and Robert Wayne Mitchell after being indicted by a Tallapoosa County Grand Jury in Aug. 2016.

The brother and sister were shot to death in the mobile home they shared on Pate Road in Goldville Oct. 8, 2015. Authorities said shortly after the shootings, that Stevens, who was Sharpe’s boyfriend, allegedly admitted to shooting the two after surrendering to New Site Police.

“At this time, it appears that the Stevens case will be the first one called when the spring term begins on April 9 in Alexander City,” District Attorney Jeremy Duerr said. “Unless something unforeseen happens, that will be the top priority of the term.”

Stevens was previously found competent to stand trial after a courtordered mental evaluation.

After status hearings and a round of motions, there was some movement on several other local murder cases.

For the second time in two years, a local teacher has been named a statewide finalist for the Teacher Hall of Fame at Jacksonville State University. Emily Rasbury, who teaches English and Language Arts at Horseshoe Bend, is one of the nominees in the category of secondary education.

“This is totally humbling to me,” Rasbury said. “There are a lot of everyday rewards that come from teaching, but there aren’t

a lot of major perks or accolades that come with it.”

In order for her to be named as one of the final five nominees for the Teacher Hall of Fame, Horseshoe Bend Principal James Aunler said a committee came together and nominated Rasbury for the high school side of the school. Once she had been nominated, Rasbury said there was a significant application she had to fill out in order to continue the process.

Easter is a time to celebrate rebirth

E

aster is a time renewal, a reminder of life restored.

The natural sense of the coming of spring mingles for the day with the Christian promise of eternal life, through Jesus’ death and resurrection.

Christianity was born in persecution. Jesus spoke the truth to the religious leaders of the day, and they conspired with civil officials to kill him.

Christians suffered persecution at the hands of the Romans, pagan barbarians and Muslim invaders over the centuries. Great Christian civilizations like the Byzantine Empire were wiped from the map. Today, Christians die for their beliefs at the hands of the Islamic State’s Muslim fanatics.

Real religious persecution is hard for us to truly comprehend in this country.

Christians battle with secular humanists and each other over social issues of the day — abortion, capital punishment, same-sex marriage — and the passion on both sides of each issue is real. In the West, with its promise of religious liberty, Christianity’s greatest enemy is apathy, and a growing indifference to spirituality.

This weekend, about 2 billion Christians will celebrate the most important event on the church calendar.

Christmas — the celebration of the birth of Jesus — might attract the most attention in the secular world because of its great commercial importance.

But Easter is essential to Christianity’s very meaning.

For Christians, there is no Christianity without Jesus’ resurrection. It promises victory over death. It promises eternal life. It promises salvation. And Christians believe that it is granted freely to all who seek it.

Easter’s celebration again brings hope to Christians around the globe. Now, as they have through the centuries, many will take comfort in that hope in a world that seems to be growing increasingly dangerous and chaotic.

And on Easter, we mark the cycle of life and death and life again, knowing that joy and pain are its inevitable shoots.

We endure and we rejoice, and we remember once more that we can renew and begin again.

cross the country, lawmakers are realizing the costs associated with the rampant overuse of occupational licensing laws.

Alabama Policy Institute’s recent report shows more than 21 percent of Alabama workers are licensed. This means more than one in five Alabamians need a government permission slip to work.

Although the original impetus behind states’ licensing practices was the assurance of public safety, the current system of occupational licensing has become so burdensome voices from left, right, and center have noticed.

The Trump and Obama administrations, The Institute for Justice and the Brookings Institute, among others, are all in agreement: occupational licensing practices need to be changed.

The fact is these laws affect real people — real, everyday Alabamians.

Bruce Locke, a retired construction company owner and north Alabama native, is one of those people. A dedicated husband, father, grandpa, and Army veteran became an auctioneer after retiring.

Before he could work, however, Locke had to pay for state-approved education, apprentice for one year and hand over hundreds of dollars in fees to the government.

PARKER SNIDER Columnist He fulfilled the state’s licensure requirements but, after years of being a successful auctioneer, was suddenly fined $500 by the Alabama State Board of Auctioneers.

According to the board-hired investigator, Locke, who had a current license to work, was being fined for not filling out a specific form. The problem, however, is Locke, after being a licensed auctioneer for years, had no knowledge of this form.

When he asked, Locke learned the form was created recently.

Even so, he was not told about the form nor given any sort of warning. He was instead fined.

Locke, therefore, under the threat of losing his business, had no choice but to pay the $500 fine.

He later, out of frustration and disgust in the board’s apparent greed, gave up his license and sold his business.

This is just one example of occupational licensing gone awry. Thanks to occupational licensing, Alabama ran a profitable man out of business, forsaking revenue in both sales and income tax.

The truth is, as Locke put it,

“There are a lot of states that do not have auctioneer licenses, and they’re doing just fine.”

He’s right. There are twenty states that do not license the occupation of auctioneers. In fact, the report found, more broadly, Alabama licenses 31 occupations that are not widely licensed in other states, including locksmiths and sign language interpreters.

If it were truly a matter of public safety, one would think there would be relative conformity among the states. The report, however, found licensing practices are widely varied, even among our neighboring and nearby states. One explanation of this may be economic protectionism—when members of an occupation, in a desire to limit competition, lobby the state legislature to establish licensure.

In Montgomery, lawmakers are reviewing legislation that addresses occupational licensing, specifically when it affects military families and veterans.

Conservatives should applaud these attempts to curb big government’s grip on citizens while continuing to push for more comprehensive reforms.

The connection between college and religion

I

f we received our evidence from only TV talk shows, and social media posts, we would assume colleges are anti-Christian. Yet when we go to college campuses, especially the private non-profit schools which are religiouslyaffiliated, it’s a very different story. Such colleges are one of the few institutions that can actually reinforce the faith of our students, and even those among the administration, faculty and staff.

First of all, the populist attack on higher education is nothing new. More than 100 years ago, Democratic politician William Jennings Bryan went on a barnstorming tour across the United States. Stung by being rejected by the voters three times in presidential bids, Bryan found a new source to blame for his shortcomings: colleges. He accused universities of promoting atheism, according to Daniel Cox with 538.com.

“Our classrooms furnish an arena in which a brutish doctrine tears to pieces the religious faith of young men and young women,” Bryan thundered.

But whether it’s an oldtime politician or a modernday political opportunist, the argument doesn’t stand up to scrutiny. A PRRI poll finds nearly 80 percent of crises of faith and a decision to leave the church occur long before the young person turns 18. Family actions, such as divorce, church attendance and other behaviors weigh heavily on a child, far more than some teacher forcing him or her into religion.

When critics run the numbers, they typically survey the

JOHN TURES Columnist behavior of all 18- to 24 yearolds, assuming all of them are college students. But only a third or less actually go to college.

In fact, evidence I have cited in a prior column on this subject noted those who go to college maintain their faith better than those who are 18 to 24 who don’t go to college.

True, millennials don’t attend church or Sunday School as much as their Baby Boomer counterparts. But I would love to see those numbers compare students at public schools versus the private non-profit colleges.

You see plenty of our students make up the Fellowship of Christian Athletes, the Wesleyan group, Baptist Student Union, etc. Plenty come down to our Wednesday Evening Weekly (WEW), walking the extra mile for food that they could otherwise get at our cafeteria.

These students who I see greet me as I occasionally serve up a dish of mashed potatoes. And you can even find a few making their way to the pew and Sunday school youth group, helping out with kids like mine with Sunday school lessons.

Nor are such responsibilities confined to our outstanding chaplain and his wife, a key community organizer, who team up with Religion faculty to lead mission trips abroad and at home. We have faculty (liberal and conservative) too

who are not only active in their church, but I’ve seen them meet individually with students (and not just in one of our many religion classes, of which all students must take at least one class to graduate) to talk about faith and crises of conscience.

I want to cite one in particular: Biology Professor Sarah Beth Mallory. I mention her because she counseled me. We had discussions of our faiths while serving together on committees and judging at presidential scholars weekends. She told me what Baptists believe in, what it means to have a public expression of faith, and why it’s important, and how she reconciles faith and science. She passed away last week after a lengthy battle with an illness, but I’ll always remember her willingness to share so much with someone from a different faith.

If you are a young student looking at colleges or the parent of one, don’t believe the political hype and bids for cheap votes to drive an agenda that may not always follow your religious doctrine. Don’t be a “Doubting Thomas.” Come to a religiouslyaffiliated college. Meet students and college personnel for yourself. See if they’ll do what our college’s stated goal is: to challenge the mind and inspire the soul. More likely than not, you or your student will do the challenging and inspiring too.

5K run, followed by a table decorating contest, a scavenger hunt, a butterfly coloring contest, lunch and a hot dog eating contest. For $1, guests will be able to purchase a hot dog lunch, which also includes chips and a drink.

“The start and finish line for the 5K will be in the same spot,” Porter said.

“The course will take runners through the neighborhood around the park, down by the ball field, then back up to the park on one lap around the walking track. Those participating in the 5K need to be at the park at 9:45 in the morning.”

Currently, there are eight remaining tables available for interested parties to register to decorate for the event, though Porter said if enough people expressed an interest in participating in the decorating contest, a few more tables could be added. At the same time, the butterfly coloring competition

will help add more color and vibrancy to the park. With a large wooden butterfly ready to decorate the park, Porter said the various entries from coloring competition participants will be judged, and the winning submission will be used as the design for the butterfly when it receives its paint job in the near future.

“At around 11, we’ll start the scavenger hunt,” Porter said. “Between now and the day of the celebration, we’ll have several of the plaques with information about the trees in the park up. Participants will have to go around, find the information on those plaques and write it all down.”

The last of the competitions, the hot dog eating contest, is only open for visitors age 16 and up, who must sign a waiver before the competition. The winner will be determined as who can eat the greatest number of hot dogs in

60 seconds.

Porter said she had been trying to think of something to get the community more interested in the goings-on at the park during the spring months, while inspiration finally struck her after someone suggested to her having a 5K or one-mile run through the park to showcase the work she and others have done to breathe new life into Keebler Park.

“Everything just grew from there,” Porter said. “We haven’t had a lot of time to put all of this together, but I feel this can be a very successful event.”

While the celebration is a great way to get the community out and enjoying a Saturday in Keebler Park, the event will also serve as a fundraiser for the park, bringing in money that can be used for projects to beautify the park.

“We might take some of the money

and do some repainting on Creation Plantation,” Porter said. “We might also look at planting an herb garden at Creation Plantation or in the park.”

Since putting the spring celebration together, Porter has been going to local groups and organizations, spreading the word about the event to drum up interest.

“I’ve been met with nothing but enthusiasm,” she said. “Everyone is pleased something is happening at the park.”

For those interested in taking part in the table decorating contest, registration forms can be picked up at Dadeville City Hall, while 5K registration forms can be found at city hall, the Dadeville Chamber of Commerce and Mix it Up at Lake Martin. The cost for participating in the 5K is $5, while there is a $25 cost to submit an entry for the table decorating contest.

In a development in the case, Judge Steve Perryman granted a motion by defense attorney Mitchell seeking funding for an investigator for the defense to prepare for trial.

The order allows $3,500 to the defense to help research the case before it goes to trial.

Wright, now 19, of Alexander City is accused killing 28-year-old LaBrandon Lamar Herron of Kellyton during an incident in the Spring Hill community. Reports indicate that Herron was shot multiple times in the early morning hours of Oct. 30, 2016 and died from his injuries. A second victim was also shot and Wright is also charged with attempted murder. That victim, whose name was not released, did not suffer lifethreatening injuries and was treated and released.

Wright has undergone mental evaluation, but the report has not been finalized,

court records show. Judge Steven Perryman has granted a motion to continue the case until the fall term in Alexander City. Sept. 19, 2018 • Dadeville residents Edward Rashun Thomas, 20, and 20-year-old Bobby Lee Ponds Jr., were arrested Jan. 20, 2017 and charged with capital murder for their alleged involvement in the shooting death of 27-yearold LaDarrell Lamar Hart in his Third Street home on Jan. 18, 2017. A preliminary hearing painted Thomas as the triggerman and Ponds as helping in the aftermath of the crime. Both men have been

indicted and denied youthful offender status.

In a development this week, a motion for mental evaluation on Thomas was granted by Perryman and that process will now be started.

Due to the caseload, that often takes several months to get scheduled and completed.

• Anthony Davon Parker is accused of reckless murder and shooting into an occupied vehicle in a March 28, 2017 incident that claimed the life of 18-year-old Quentavious Arrion Reese. It is alleged that Parker was at the home of Jeffery Bruno off Robinson Road near Alexander City and

was shooting a .45 caliber handgun. Testimony at a preliminary hearing indicated that Parker had been target shooting and Reese had been at the home, before leaving in a vehicle with a group of friends.

Parker allegedly shot towards the same vehicle as it came back down the road, a shot that struck Reese and eventually caused his death.

Parker is out on bond and his motion for youthful offender status was denied. Parker’s has asked for a continuance in the case. Nothing has been finalized on the motion, records show.

Deputy Dadeville, he also ordered the estate of Stewart to pay the court costs encountered by the defendants.

“This was a tragic thing from the beginning as it is anytime when there is a loss of life,” Tallapoosa County Sheriff Jimmy Abbett said. “To see a judge rule just as the Tallapoosa County Grand Jury did when it exonerated the deputy involved in this, this is a relief. For three years it has been a very emotional process to go through and we really couldn’t put it behind us until we got some final ruling. We hope this will allow that to happen.”

The ruling is the latest in nearly two years of legal wrangling that included depositions, arbitration, hearings in Florida and then the testimony in Georgia earlier this week.

On Feb. 11, 2015, Stewart was killed after units responded to reports that a man was walking along Booger Hollow Road near Dadeville with “a gun and threatening to kill people.”

Stewart and after a brief foot chase reportedly ordered him to drop the weapon that was later found to be a BB gun. When he failed to comply and show his hand, testimony and a video indicated that Stewart pulled the gun from behind his back and the deputy fired, killing Stewart.

Even though a Tallapoosa County Grand Jury found no wrongdoing by the deputy or the department, the suit filed in December 2016 in Montgomery alleges that Stewart’s civil rights were violated and seeks unspecified damages as a result.

Land ruled that the deputy was within his rights, did not use unreasonable judgment or force and did not violate Stewart’s constitutional rights. “(The deputy) had probable cause to believe that Stewart posed a danger to (the deputy) and other officers on the scene. (The deputy) was not required to wait any longer before using deadly force,” Land wrote in his final judgment.

“Notwithstanding the tragic nature of the shooting, it would not have been clear to a reasonable officer that the shooting was unreasonable under the circumstances. … under clearly established law, when a suspect does not comply with officers’ commands, officers are not required to wait until the moment a suspect uses deadly force to stop the suspect. Because (the deputy’s) conduct did not violate Stewart’s clearly established constitutional rights, (the deputy) is

entitled to qualified immunity on Plaintiff’s excessive force claim.

The law does not require officers in a tense and dangerous situation to wait until the moment a suspect uses a deadly weapon to act to stop the suspect.”

Testimony was heard this week in Columbus, Georgia and Land also viewed evidence including photos and the body cam video from the incident.

While the video has not been released to the public, a photo that

was extracted from the deputy’s body cam video has been released. The picture shows Stewart from about 15 feet away, clearly holding a gun that is moving upwards as if to prepare to shoot. The black handgun was found to be a BB gun, but from the photo it looks no different than the black semi-automatic weapon that is commonly used by law enforcement.

Stewart’s family was represented in the suit

by Montgomery-based attorney Grif Sikes Jr. Sikes said Friday that he

and his clients are now conferring to see if an appeal will be filed.

“Judge Land’s ruling was just the opposite of what a Florida magistrate had ruled,” Sikes said.

“In that ruling, which Thursday’s judgment overturned, said that the deputy was not immune and ordered that a trial date be set. We believe that the magistrate had it right. We have 30 days to file an appeal, and we will look at the options and make that determination in the allotted time.”

Finding the rest of the story of a

WAYWARD PIGEON MITCH SNEED Editor

B

eing in the newspaper business, you never know what the next phone call will bring.

We get tips on government corruption, word that there has been an auto accident or that a house is on fire.

We get calls of people asking for directions or if we have copies of a 1966 newspaper where a picture of their grandfather was on the front page after he killed a 6-foot-long rattlesnake.

This week it was a call about a wayward pigeon.

That’s right. A local man had a puzzling pigeon problem.

When John Sandlin saw a plump pigeon lingering on the porch of his Jacksons Gap home earlier this week, he knew something wasn’t right.

Beside the fact that seeing a pigeon out by the lake is rare, this one didn’t seem to want to leave.

“It looks healthy, but it is very big and it’s like it’s hurt or something. It don’t want to leave,” Sandlin said in his first call. “It’s almost tame and it don’t get skittish when you get close to it. I’m afraid it’s hurt and that a possum or cat or a raccoon may get after it.”

Sandlin saw that the bird had bands on each of its legs. Not sure what to do, Sandlin called The Outlook and told them what he had found.

We planned to come as soon as he saw the bird to get a look for ourselves.

So when the bird emerged from under the porch, our Cliff Williams ran out to try to get a picture. But by the time we got out to Rocky Wall Lane off Windy Point, the bird was back in hiding.

After spending the better part of a day under and on Sandlin’s porch,

John Sandlin noticed this pigeon lingering around his Jacksons Gap home earlier this week, but it puzzled him as to why it didn’t want to seem to leave. After The Outlook got involved, it was discovered by the bird’s marking bands that the bird was a part of the American Racing Pigeon Union and belonged to Wes Howell of Monticello, Florida. Sandlin was excited to learn the owner of the bird was found.

Sandlin was able to pick up the bird and get a good look. And the bird came to him, so Sandlin brought it to our office to see if we could help.

We took a look at the bands and found the letters AU, the word Foy’s and the number 1805. Being so close to Auburn, I figured the AU may have meant that it was from Auburn University. After a few calls, I reached Audrey Grindle in the Department of Wildlife Sciences who said she would check to see if it was part of a research project.

A few minutes later she called to say

the markings meant that it was a racing pigeon.

In pigeon racing, a breed bird called a Racing Homer is taken a carefully measured distance from their homes.

Using a special band in the leg, the time it takes the animal to cover the specified distance is measured and the bird’s rate of travel is figured and if it is faster than the others in the race it is the winner.

Grindle was very helpful and supplied a website where the bird could possibly be tracked back to its owner.

The folks at the American Racing

Pigeon Union referred me to a vendor who sold the bands. They were able to use the number to find out that it the wayward pigeon belonged to Wes Howell of Monticello, Florida. They even supplied a phone number.

After leaving a message, I finally hooked up with Howell Thursday afternoon and sure enough, this was his missing bird.

“We were in Clanton, Alabama last weekend and it was supposed to fly 240 miles back home to Monticello,” Howell said. “That happens sometimes.

They run into some kind or trouble, injure themselves and sometimes they just get lost or distracted. I can’t believe Mr. Sandlin and you went to so much trouble to track me down. That is incredibly nice. We are working on a place to meet up because we will be back in Alabama this weekend for another race.”

Sandlin and his wife took great care of the bird. They even bought a larger cage and food so that the pigeon could get plenty of nourishment and stay safe from potential predators outside.

He was so excited to hear that the owner had been found and to know the rest of the story. The two plan to meet in Alex City tonight and get the bird back where he belongs.

“I sure am glad that you were able to track the owner down,” Sandlin said.

“Sometimes you see something and you just know there is more to the story.

I didn’t have any idea how to find all that out. An hour after you saw it, you had all the answers. I can’t thank you enough for helping me do that.

“I’m just tickled that we will be able to get the pigeon back to his owner and he get home where he belongs safe and sound.”

I love a story with a happy ending.

It’s pretty cool knowing that we not only found a great story of someone doing something good, but even played a little part in the process.

All in a day’s work for a newspaperman.

We went to the Civil Rights Museum. I saw the Rosa Parks display and saw a bus where she had to sit in the back. It is not right for black folks to have to sit in the back.�

Moten said it was good trip with great participation. “We had 85 people go,� Moten said. “They were as young as 3-years-old to 96-, 91- and 88-years-old.�

The group also got a glance at other African American history in Birmingham as they stopped by the Negro League Baseball Museum. “I saw baseball bats and balls,� Ransaw said.

Moten explained the trip was made possible

by Tallapoosa County Commissioner T.C. Coley and it is not the first time he has done so. “This is the second trip he has paid for,�

Moten said. “He paid for one in the fall too. He took care of admission to the museum, food and transportation. We went on two charter buses this time. “We could sit anywhere we wanted on the bus. We had a great time.�

impact in the community,� Wright said. “Over the past couple of years, the word has gotten out about us doing this. I was in AutoZone or Advance Auto Parts and someone came up to me and asked if I had heard what was going on down at Mt. Zion. “The first year we did this, we had 28 people profess their faith in the Lord, and I think we had about another 12 accept the Lord last year. We have had a lot of response to this.�

One of those who were saved after witnessing the crucifixion re-enactment admitted later she had initially come to the church to visit a family member in the graveyard, and was then planning on returning home to commit suicide, but

instead discovered her faith and returned home with a new sense of purpose and reason for living after realizing what was being represented in the churchyard. This person, who Wright said was legally blind, called him approximately a week later to tell him her sight had returned, and wanted to come back to the church from her home several hours away in order to be baptized.

Unlike the actual crucifixion 2,000 years ago, the church members on the cross had straps to hold on to and a wooden platform to stand on, making the depiction a bit more comfortable on those participating.

Rather than sponges soaked in vinegar, cold bottles of water were made available to keep the members well hydrated.

Rasbury pages long,� Rasbury said. “There were a lot of essay-type questions and situational questions. After the application is submitted, there was an interview process I had to go through.

The panel interviewing me, there were representatives from Jacksonville State and people from outside the university.�

Among the questions Rasbury had to answer, she was asked what she hoped her students would remember of her after leaving her classroom. Her response? “I hope they know they felt loved while they were in my room,� she said. “We’re proud of her and all that she stands for,�

Aulner said. “This shows that we have got a great faculty and staff out here. “There are great teachers out there, even at smaller schools like ours.�

Aulner described Rasbury as a go-to teacher at Horseshoe Bend, someone who searches for a solution to problems before she starts griping about them. One of many instances where she has worked to solve a problem instead of complaining about it, Aulner mentioned how Rasbury went out and received a special certification in order to be able to teach dual enrollment English, since not all high school students at Horseshoe Bend are able to get to Central Alabama Community College or Southern Union for dual enrollment classes. “She is one of the hardest working teachers I have, and it is very much an honor to have her make the final five,� Aulner said. “It’s every teacher’s dream to be recognized and validated in some way.�

Whether Rasbury is named to the Teacher Hall of Fame or not, both she

and Aulner felt making it to the final five was a great accomplishment and a notable achievement in and of itself. “It’s very much an honor to have her made the final five,� Aulner said. “As far as I can remember, she’s the first teacher honored as a finalist since I’ve been the principal here.� “When someone recognizes you for what you do every day, it’s humbling,� Rasbury said. “I think it’s a great +

achievement to be in the final five candidates.�

The induction ceremony for the three newest members of the Teacher Hall of Fame, one each from the categories of elementary, middle and high school, is tentatively scheduled for April 26 on the campus of Jacksonville State, and Rasbury is excited to be attending as one of the nominees. “This is huge,� she said. “Things like this make you want to keep going.�

Church members took turns in representing Jesus, the two thieves, the Roman soldiers and disciples and other mourners. When the members needed a break from the re-enactment, others had prepared plenty of food and drinks for refreshments.

The crowd of members at Mt. Zion was somewhat smaller in the early afternoon, but Wright said more would show up and take part later in the day after leaving work. “We love doing this, and we’re glad to get to do it,� Wright said. “Everybody kicks in to help out. We appreciate everyone coming out to do this.�

After the crucifixion re-enactment wrapped up Friday evening, church

members took the person portraying Jesus down from the cross to be placed in a representation of the tomb. Sunday, Wright said the stone blocking the tomb entrance would be rolled away, while a church member will be dressed as an angel, standing on top of the tomb singing the praises of the resurrection. Also Sunday, Mt. Zion will be holding a sunrise service at 7 a.m. in Wind Creek State Park to celebrate the Easter resurrection, followed by a special Easter cantata service at 10:30 a.m. at the church. “We enjoy doing things like this. We have a lot of fun,� Wright said. “We want to continue doing this for as long as we can.�

‘WONDER WOMAN’ Deb Arnold is irreplaceable as Benjamin Russell trainer

Some schools in the state are lucky enough to have an athletic trainer who’s on site regularly and attends more than just Friday night football games. Not every school is even that lucky.

But there’s arguably not a school as fortunate as Benjamin Russell, which has the daily support of athletic trainer Deb Arnold.

“Benjamin Russell is really really lucky to have her because I would say she’s probably the best in the state,” said former BRHS football coach Danny Horn, who developed a close relationship with Arnold especially after coming from a school without a regular trainer. “She’s spoiled me over the years, she really has.

She just always has a smile on her face, and when I’ve had some tough times, I always say I need to go talk to her because she can brighten me up.”

More than just good for a smile and a laugh, Arnold, along with the rest of the athletic training team provided by Russell Medical, is essential to the success of the Wildcats’ programs.

For schools that don’t have a trainer, it is left up to coaches to take charge of the medical care of their student-athletes. This can be problematic for several reasons.

Not only are coaches not trained as extensively as athletic trainers, they are also put in a position of wanting their athletes to play when maybe they shouldn’t.

Arnold is used to making those tough decisions.

“The most important thing for me is that it’s my job to make the best decision for the athlete, not just for the short term, but the long term,” Arnold said. “If I lose sight of that, I lose sight of what’s important. I can’t be governed by the pressure of the moment. It’s there, but I have to make the right decision for them overall, whether anyone else likes it or not.”

in her field and with the Benjamin Russell coaches, they easily trust her decisions.

“She is super knowledgeable at her job, and she goes above and beyond,” BRHS athletic director Pam Robinson said. “I think that how much she cares for the kids comes out. She holds them to a high standard, and it’s like she’s part of the team.”

Horn said, “She’s just a coach’s dream, to be honest about it. It’s nice to be able to coach and not be have to worry about some of the other stuff. She takes care of all the injuries, she works them and rehabs them. She does all the concussion protocols and does all the physicals. It’s just something that I didn’t really have to worry about.”

Benjamin Russell has the advantage of being near Russell Medical, which provides both Arnold and Marty McCann, who

is in charge of the Alexander City Middle School programs.

Russell Medical also provides Sara Peuster to Horseshoe Bend through a program that was started by Diana Shunkwiler.

“I love working for Russell Medical Center,” Arnold said.

“They have been wonderful to me; they have given me so much support to develop, and they really set me up well to continue with the program. The hospital has really been the force behind challenging us, and we feel like it’s so worth it to provide this service to the community. A goal in our profession would be to have someone at every high school in the state.”

Arnold also has first-hand knowledge of what it’s like to be a student-athlete. She was a swimmer in high school and college, as she attended Illinois State. Arnold did an internship in Auburn for a year before coming

NASP championship held soon STAFF REPORT TPI Staff

The largest youth archery competition in Alabama, the National Archery in the Schools Program (NASP) Alabama State Championship, will be held Friday at the Multiplex at Cramton Bowl in Montgomery. Archers will begin shooting at 9 a.m.

The awards ceremony is scheduled for 5 p.m. The public is invited.

This year’s event will feature more than 1,200 young archers in grades 4-12 from schools across the state who earned a berth at the state championship after competing in one of nine regional qualifying tournaments. These students will compete for the title of state champion and the opportunity to advance to the NASP Eastern National Championship on May 10-12 in Louisville, Kentucky.

The NASP is a joint venture between the Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (ADCNR) Wildlife and

Freshwater Fisheries Division (WFF) and the Alabama Department of Education.

NASP instills discipline and concentration. Participants also learn a life skill as part of a school’s physical education course or after-school program. Scoring is based on Olympic-style, target archery in three divisions — elementary, middle and high school. Competition is on team and individual levels.

The state championship would not be possible without the sponsorships of the Alabama Chapter of the National Wild Turkey Federation, Morrell Manufacturing, the Alabama Conservation Enforcement Officers Association, Alabama Wildlife Federation and the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation.

safely and healthily. They know that Marty, Sara and I have their backs, and they know we’ll be there to take care of them and hopefully that gives them a measure of confidence to play full speed and without worry because they’ll get the best possible care you could ever provide when they do face injuries.”

And the coaches know just how much Arnold means to the prosperity of their teams.

“Over time, the kids love her just like everybody else does,” Horn said. “They know that she’s very good at what she does, and she has a good relationship with everyone. I’m going to miss a lot of things about Benjamin Russell but she’s at the top of what I’m going to miss because of what she brings to the table. If there ever was a Wonder Woman in Alex City, she would be Wonder Woman.”

Obviously being in the community for so long has helped her grow her love for the Wildcats, and she said building those relationships has been the best part of the last 14 years.

“Probably my favorite part of the job is getting to know coaches, students and administration,” Arnold said.

“We have such amazing coaches, who have just chosen to trust my judgment and work with me and hear suggestions. As times have changed and as issues have become more hot button, I can’t say enough about the support of the coaches in allowing us to adapt and change.

“The training room is a great place to develop relationships, and I take interest in the details of their lives as much as possible.

Rebels, Generals meet in area rivalry

Knowing it’s going to be relatively easy to get through Lanett and LaFayette, the Class 2A Area 8 baseball title is up for grabs for either Horseshoe Bend or Reeltown. The only real challenge they’ll face is getting through each other. The teams meet for the first time at noon today for the Game of the Week.

Reeltown (12-9) has gone through some ups and downs this season after graduating the bulk of its starters a year ago, but that doesn’t mean the Generals (10-6) are taking today’s game easily.

“I know they lost a lot from last year, so they’re really going to have a whole new starting lineup, I would think,” Horseshoe Bend coach Jason Johnson said.

“They always swing the ball well, they’re well-coached and they’re scrappy. They’re always going to get after you, so we’re going to go in and do what we can.”

Hayden Solomon has been the most consistent offensively, while Landon Hunt, Ardarius Woods and Drew Favors have all had key hits lately for the Rebels.

Landon Hunt and Logan Hunt have thrown the most innings so far, and one of those should be expected to take the mound today. Although Reeltown doesn’t allow too many hits, it has struggled with walks and some

untimely errors thus far.

On the other hand, Horseshoe Bend is going through the same growing pains. The Generals have shown some inconsistency and are coming off an 11-1 loss to Dadeville, which was tied 1-1 heading into the fifth inning before things fell apart.

“We cannot handle adversity whatsoever,” Johnson said. “That’s been the M.O. all year, we play four or five good innings then we have one where we just fall apart, and nobody wants to be the guy right now.”

Grant Taylor and Jace Rodriguez are expected to pitch, while the Generals will be looking for big offensive performances from guys like Chandler Lewis, Cade Worthy and Lee Norrell, who man the top of the order.

“Anytime you play at home, it helps you out,” Johnson said. “Hopefully that’ll be an advantage for us. It’ll be us and Reeltown, whoever wins that is going to be the area winner.

That’s the way it’s been for the last three or four years, so we know going into Saturday, if you lose, you’re behind the 8-ball. It’s a big one.”
