Dogs attack, kill ‘full-grown mama cow’ No charges filed yet as owners of dogs and cow sort things out By MITCH SNEED Editor

A local man is still looking for answers after two dogs attacked and killed a “pregnant mama cow with a calf at her side” Monday. Alexander City Police responded to North Central Avenue after John Ballard reported that two full-grown Rottweilers attacked a cow in a pasture on his farm. See COW • Page 6

For the last several years, the First Presbyterian Day School of Alexander City has hosted a spring dance. This year was no different as the nearly 30 students danced, some with parents and grandparents like Morgan Baker and his three-year-old daughter Karleigh. Tracy Thomas, school director says they hold several events throughout the year for the children at holidays, a Cat in the Hat day and a fall festival. For more photos see page 6.

Alex City schools drop tuition Non-resident enrollees will pay $500 rather than $2,500 under new plan By MITCH SNEED Editor

The Alexander City School Board approved an 80 percent reduction in the tuition the system charges to non-resident students Tuesday. In a unanimous vote of the members in attendance, the board approved reducing the rate from $2,500 for the first student in a family to $500. The fee for each additional student in the same family would drop from $2,000 to $300. “This is something that we have looked at for awhile and we felt like it made sense for the system now,” Alexander City Schools Superintendent

County schools to seek property tax hike vote

The Tallapoosa County Board of Education voted to ask the Tallapoosa County Commission to put a property tax on the ballot for public referendum and to separate the Reeltown School into an elementary school and high school at its meeting Monday. Hospital to break ground on urgent care Thursday By CLIFF WILLIAMS Staff Writer

While the official ground-breaking for Russell Medical’s new urgent care facility is Thursday, crews have been doing site work for almost a week.

Ground will be officially broken Thursday for the newest facility at Russell Medical. “We are having a groundbreaking ceremony for our new Total Healthcare and Urgent Care Facility,” Russell Medical’s Susan Foy said. The new facility will be constructed on the hill above the Russell Medical Cancer Center. Russell Medical CEO Jim Peace thinks the facility will be easily available to area residents and will serve a need in the community. “It will be up on the hill next to our cancer center,” Peace said. “It will have visibility from the road. “The board has talked about an urgent care

The New Site Town Council officially named Philip Weddle police chief Monday night. Weddle, who has been with the department for five years and has served in law enforcement for 32 years will take the position that had been filled by John McKelvey who will retire at the end of this month. Weddle said that he is honored to serve the people of New Site. “I feel like we have worked very hard to serve the people of New Site and that won’t change,” Weddle said. “I will keep working to make this community as safe as it possibly can be and be there for the people New Site and help any way we possibly can.” Weddle said that in New Site the emphasis has been on community policing and creating a presence that helps deter crime. “We will try hard to be an active part of the See CHIEF • Page 7
