Local store safe for now as parent company announces bankruptcy By CLIFF WILLIAMS Staff Writer
Winn-Dixie’s parent company Southeastern Grocers will close 94 stores as it files for Chapter 11 bank bankruptcy. The Alexander City location is not one of the nine Alabama stores it plans to close, something Alexander City Chamber of Commerce President Ed Collari is proud of. “I am not surprised,â€? Collari said. “We know it is one of the better performing stores they have. It is great for the community because of the sales tax and is one of the top stores in the community. It is the primary grocery store in the area. You can see it on any Friday during the lake season. You can see part-timers, weekenders and full-timers buying for the weekend. It is also important because it serves as an anchor to the shopping center.â€? Southeastern Grocers made the announcement about the bankruptcy and store closings in a statement Thursday afternoon. illie Charles McKinney loves to fish whether he catches anything or not – but some of his favorite spots are going away. One of McKinney’s favorite spots used to be on a creek off of Dean Road. “I used to go down there,â€? McKinney said while checking his lines cast into Lake Martin under a bridge on Highway 63. “There it was good fishin’ but they kept dumping garbage out there. They were leaving all sorts of stuff – tires, mattresses and stuff.â€? See FISHING • Page 7

Alexander City’s building official has a wide range of responsibilities – from inspecting new construction to assure that city codes are met, working with builders, inspectors and the public, to making sure that historical buildings maintain their integrity. The city will begin interviews for the position today after the retirement of Gaines Hodnett who had served in that position for many years. See BUILDING • Page 3
