Plans for ‘Throw Away Day’ take shape
Sunday sales in New Site to be put to a vote By MITCH SNEED Editor
New Site became the latest Tallapoosa County municipality to decide to let the people decide on whether they want alcohol sales to be allowed on Sunday. The New Site Town Council voted 6-0 Monday night to put the issue on the ballot in an upcoming election. That means that the town will join Dadeville, Alexander City and unincorporated Tallapoosa County in putting the issue before the voters. “It doesn’t mean that we are for it or against it,” New Site Mayor Curtis Mims said. “We all have our own personal opinions. All this does is say that we believe it is important enough to let the people vote on it and have their say. I personally think that is the right way to decide an issue as important as this.” Members of the council spent time discussing the issue, with some saying it would be unfair to local businesses that would face competition from others that are outside the town limits. “I know the people would have to decide, but it would be tough on them if a store say in Goldville could sell on Sunday and the ones here in town couldn’t,” Councilman Michael East said. “So I think letting the people decide is the way to go.” In other business the council continued the discussion of business license See SALES • Page 6

Imagine a day when everyone across the entire county would work together to make the area as clean and beautiful as it can be. That day is coming as efforts are underway to organize a first ever Tallapoosa County-wide cleanup, which will take place in April. Called Throw Away Day, organizers hope a county effort, an annual city cleanup in Alexander City and more volunteer groups will combine to make Saturday, April 23, a day that the entire county gets a spring cleaning. “We are really hoping to make this a true county-wide effort,” said John Thompson, president of the Lake Martin Resource Association. “We have seen interest grow in helping out and we are hoping that with this event, we can have a real grassroots effort where civic clubs, companies, youth groups and just groups of residents interested in cleaning up a stretch of road or around

Horseshoe Bend National Military Park is hosting the 202nd anniversary of the Battle of Horseshoe Bend Saturday. “It is the 202nd Anniversary of the Battle,” Park Ranger Heather Tassin said. “This year we have a big project, the dug out canoe.” The canoe has been several months in the making. One canoe is being constructed at the park and the other in Oklahoma. Both are from the same poplar tree harvested in Dadeville last fall. “Citizens of the Muscogee Nation in Oklahoma will be here working on the canoe,” Tassin said. The 17-foot canoe will become part of
