A bill that would abolish marriage licenses in the state, in response to the national debate over government-sanctioned marriage, passed in the Alabama Senate Wednesday in a 22-6 vote. Sen. Greg Albritton (R-Bay Minette) is the sponsor of Senate Bill 20 and if it clears the House and is signed into law by Gov. Robert Bentley, it would abolish all requirements to obtain a marriage license in Alabama. Instead, probate judges would simply record civil contracts of marriage between two individuals based on signed affidavits. After the U.S. Supreme Court legalized same-sax marriage nationwide in Obergefell v. Hodges, similar bills have been continually introduced in the state legislature. Many Alabama probate judges stopped issuing licenses after the court’s decision, and eight jurisdictions are continuing that practice as of last October. Tallapoosa County Probate Court Judge Leon Archer said he was aware of the bill, but didn’t see where it would significantly change the workload in the state’s probate offices. See BILL • Page 3
