After the idea was launched by readers on The Outlook’s Facebook page, a makeshift memorial to Alexander City’s own Thomas Jacob “Toot Toot” Marbury Jr. is growing on the bench where he could be found on most days. Flowers began appearing on the bench outside the Alexander City Police Department late Wednesday evening and by 10 a.m. Thursday, the bench was beginning to fill up with arrangements of all sorts of
bright-colored flowers. “It is just amazing how many people he touched,” said Marbury’s sister Alice Thomas-Hall. “We have just been overwhelmed by the outpouring of love and support from everyone. It’s just been amazing to see and hear what he meant to the people he met.” Marbury passed away Wednesday morning in Birmingham. Family and friends confirmed Toot Toot passed at the University of Alabama-Birmingham Medical Center. Family said that he suffered heart failure Wednesday morning

In recent weeks Alexander City motorists have seen paving work on neighborhood streets as well as feeder roads. Alexander City Engineer and Public Works Director Gerard Brewer said Thursday that work is about 90 percent completed, with just stripping and some shoulder work remaining. “They have just finished up on Dean Road and that was the final one that we had on this year’s list,” Brewer said. “We are still doing come cleanup and shoulder work that we are handling in house. “Other than that, they will be back in and start the permanent stripping on what has already been done. Jake’s Thursday night bingo has raised $20,000 for charity By DAVID GRANGER Staff Writer
Like at any restaurant and bar on a Thursday evening, there’s a discernible din of excitement at Jake’s, likely in anticipation of the coming weekend. But the level of noise noticeably decreases with the call of the first number. “N-33,” says Michael Mixon, son of the restaurant’s owner Jake Mixon. “N-33.” Yes, it’s bingo. And it’s a Thursday night happening at Jake’s, located at 16 Broad Street in downtown Alexander City. But there’s a catch. This is Cliff Williams / The Outlook bingo for charity. “They were doing it at Danny and Debbie Gilliland, center, of Alexander City have only missed about four Niffer’s and some of my cusweeks of bingo at Jake’s. The Gillilands frequently bring friends and family to the weekly tomers that had played there charity game.
started talking to me about starting it up here,” said Jake Mixon. “Our first month that we did it the charity was United Way. I worked with Sharon Fuller and we got everything set up and that first week was kind of slow. I thought, ‘Oh, gosh, what have I done?’ But it spread by word of mouth what we were trying to do. “Now, it’s a big hit. People come in on Thursday night, have some fun with friends, play some bingo, donate to a charity and leave feeling good about themselves.” Mixon said that since Jake’s began hosting charity bingo on Thursday nights in September 2014 through May, it has raised more than $20,000 for local charities.
