Tallassee takes no action on IDB project
By WILLIAM CARROLL and CARMEN RODGERS Staff Writers
The Tallassee City Council took no action Wednesday evening regarding the proposed construction of an access road for Gulf Packaging at the southern end of the Tallassee Industrial Park as they seek to obtain more information on the cost of the project. The meeting was a joint meeting between the council and the Tallassee Industrial Development Board to determine funding for the project. Specifically, the city had originally been requested to put up $79,000
in a cash match for engineering, design and general administration and costs as part of matching funds for an anticipated grant. When the grant did not come through, the IDB asked the city to provide the money anyway to help fund the project. During Wednesday’s meeting, city board members asked a number of questions regarding the project including the need for competitive bids. City officials stressed the need for bids, while Don Heacock, vice chairman of the Tallassee Industrial Development Board said that the IDB is exempt from such bidding requirements. During a later interview on the matter Heacock explained that under Alabama statutes the IDB has
never been required to have an open bid process. “That never has been in the past,” Heacock said. “In the past, when putting together building projects where we have had multiple bids, SCF has always come in low. We have never had a situation were we have taken competitive bids.” “In the case of a city industrial development board, as we are, board members are selected by the city council, but the thing that is not widely understood, is that the IDB is actually not a city department or a part of the city financial package. Because, in essence, the See IDB • Page 7

Donations pour in to Tallassee Fire Dept. By CARMEN RODGERS Staff Writer
Since the Tallassee mill fire, many have been interested in making donations. City Hall has received several inquiries from people who would like to make a donation to the Tallassee Fire Department. One of the most recent donations came from the owners of Patton Plaza. Following their donation, Tallassee Fire Chief Travis Jones said he would like to thank everyone who has made donations to the Tallassee Fire Department and explain how to make future donations. “I really appreciate this first donation of $1,000 we received after the mill fire,” Jones said. “When See DONATION • Page 3

Tallassee Farmer’s Market to open By CARMEN RODGERS Staff Writer
After a long spring, the fruits and vegetables are ready for picking, just in time for the opening of the Tallassee’s Farmer’s Market. The market will open Friday, June 24 and will remain open
until fresh produce is no longer readily available. “We have to go through a ten-week run, which gets us through mid to late August.” Like recent years, the market will be See MARKET • Page 3

The theft charges for former Tallassee Community Library Director Sharon Kilpatrick will be dropped under an agreement reached as part of a court-sponsored pre-trial diversion program. Judge Steven Perryman granted the defense motion for the case to be placed in pre-trial diversion. The program allows first-time offenders to meet a set of conditions to be completed within a specific time frame. If all the conditions are met, the prosecutors in turn agree to drop the charges. Court records indicate that Kilpatrick was arrested on March 3 on charges of seconddegree theft of property and second-degree theft by deception. Following her arrest, Kilpatrick was released from the Tallapoosa County Jail after posting a $10,000 bond, See LIBRARY • Page 7

The group continues this performance as a way to honor the men who fought at Iwo Jima so many years ago. “The picture was taken in February of 1945 on the island where 6,800 American soldiers had lost their lives. We do this as a tribute to them. We do the programs at schools and churches. Particularly in the schools we do this to explain the significance of the battle that took place,” Arnwine said.
