State aims to teach citizens about Zika By CARMEN RODGERS Staff Writer
As the dog days of summer set in, so do those pesky mosquitos. This year, people are taking extra precautions against these tiny nuisances because of the Zika virus. The Alabama Department of Public Health is taking several steps to ensure that youth and parents in the state understand how to protect
themselves from the Zika virus. The department has created Zika coloring books that present prevention information in an educational and fun setup. “We have two goals - to educate youth and engage them and their parents in the process of protecting themselves. We believe this coloring book will accomplish both of those goals,” said Bureau of

ATV Racing Series returns to Monster Mountain June 4 STAFF REPORT TPI Staff
The ProX ATV Motocross National Championship (ATVMX) presented by CST Tires, an AMA National Championship, is America’s most prestigious and longest-running ATV racing series. The 12-round circuit is set to continue next weekend, June 4 and 5, with round six at Monster Mountain MX Park in Tallassee. The ATVMX Series is the world’s premier showcase of four-wheeled off-road racing talent. The physically demanding sport forces riders to navigate a variety of obstacles as fast as possible over the course of two 20-minute motos, while controlling a 400-pound machine and battling alongside 20 other competitors. While it was hot Monday, the skies were clear and spirits were high as many joined the Tallassee VFW Post 5035 in celebrating Memorial Day. Marilyn Durham led the ceremony and introduced each speaker to the audi-

This summer students who heavily rely on school lunches will be able to take part in the Summer Food Service Program (SFSP). Tallassee City Schools are participating in the Summer Food Service Program. With this service, meals will be provided to all children free of charge. Acceptance and participating requirements for the program and all activities are the same for all participants. In order to bring this summer feeding program to fruition, councilman Terrel Brown asked the City Council to aid in funding the program. At the councilman’s request, the city agreed to offer $500 to assist in transportation to and from pick-up sites, which will be located throughout Tallassee. Beginning June 1 the pick-up location will be at the Tallassee Elementary on Friendship Road. Lunch will be served at the elementary school from 11:30 a.m. until 12 p.m. The following week the Tallassee Housing Authority at 904 Hickory Street will begin serving lunch from 11 a.m until 11:30 a.m. Lunch See FEED • Page 7
