Letters: Foshee offered money, sexual favors for player grades By CORY DIAZ Sports Editor

Former Stanhope Elmore head football coach and athletic director Jeff Foshee allegedly offered a special education teacher money and “sexual favors” to ensure a football player passed his classes, according to letters obtained by The Wetumpka

Herald through Alabama’s Open Records Act. In a letter to the Alabama High School Athletic Association Central Board of Control dated June 21, SEHS principal Jamey McGowin self-reported a violation of AHSAA Rule V, Coaches, Section 3, Coaches Conduct made by Foshee when he

told Stanhope special education teacher Abby Butler if the student “passed his classes, he would give her $500.” For the reported rules violations, AHSAA executive director Steve Savarese wrote in a response to McGowin, dated June 22, that See COACH • Page 8

Stoddard’s bait shop to remain open By COREY ARWOOD Staff Writer

Ongoing legal proceedings between the city and owners of a popular local bait shop have been resolved, and city officials said Tuesday the building would remain in its historic location and the building would be preserved amid repair efforts. After the last city council meeting, the city’s public works director, Tex Grier, said construction bids for Company Street should be made public by the end of the week. “We are not planning to remove the bait shop, we’re planning an alternate method,” said Grier. By the end of the month, Grier said, they plan on actually having the equipment in place to begin construction and repairs to Company Street. Preliminary results for the female inmate who died in Elmore County Jail in late June offer a potential cause of death, however final results might not be available for weeks, said an official with Elmore County Sheriff’s Office. An autopsy was requested from the Alabama Department of Forensic Science, however full blood toxicology results are not yet available, said Sheriff Bill Franklin. But, he said, a pathologist working with the results said at this point there was reason to believe Diana Layne, 39, of Pell City, died from acute bronchial pneumonia. The specialist, Franklin said, concluded Layne had been sick for “a very long time.” Franklin gave new details, which had come from the ECSO’s ongoing investigation into the matter. According to earlier reports, Layne had been in jail for roughly 5 days, after tribal police of Wind Creek Casino brought her in on Friday, June 24. However, Franklin said through their investigation they had spoken with a family member who offered that Layne had been staying at the casino for some time. See INMATE • Page 7

Area women in business group to have kickoff event By WILLIAM CARROLL Managing Editor

For area business women, future business women or women interested in the business community a new group is forming with the help of the Wetumpka Area Chamber of Commerce and will be hosting an informal informational session and reception at the Civic in Wetumpka on July 21 from 5:30 to 7 p.m. The group called River Region Women in Business is the brainchild of Tallassee business woman Shea Irvine. Irvine currently works as a licensed life insurance agent in Tallassee and has been an active member in the business community for over 10 years. Irvine said that she has had a vision to start a similar group for some time. “I have been wanting to start something like this for

awhile,” she said. “There is not a lot of support in the area to help women juggle business life and traditional female roles. When I was first starting out I could have used a lot of support from other business women who had been through what I was experiencing.” Irvine said she entered the business world because of medical issues her husband was experiencing at the time. She noted that when she was first starting out there really weren’t any groups like the kind she envisions. Irvine said that she is seeking, “a group of driven and determined businesswomen, whether business owners themselves or women seeking professional growth, to spread knowledge, to share ideas, and to encourage and support one another in their business ventures.” She said she hopes that this group will be See WOMEN • Page 3
