Alexander City Police Department is now investigating a criminal complaint involving the theft of funds spanning several years at Great Bethel Missionary Baptist Church.
A criminal complaint alleging theft of funds spanning several years at one of Alexander City’s largest churches has been filed and is now being investigated by the Alexander City Police Department. Deputy Chief Jay Turner and Detective Commander Lt. James
Easterwood both confirmed that a complaint was filed by members of Great Bethel Missionary Baptist Church late last week. “We did receive a complaint and now are in possession of information that was the basis for the allegations that were made,” Easterwood said. “It’s a lot of information that has years worth of financial records. They allege

that church funds were taken or used inappropriately over a period of years. “We have asked the Secret Service to assist us in the investigation. They have agreed to help us sort through the information and once that process is complete we will make a determination on what action is appropriate and go from there.” See THEFT • Page 3

Candidates line up as area prepares for Aug. 23 elections By MIA OSBORN and MITCH SNEED Staff Writers
The opening week of qualifying for candidates seeking seats in municipal elections is in the books as officials prepare in Alexander City, Dadeville, New Site, Jacksons Gap and Camp Hill. In the first week of qualifying, 35 civicminded people have joined the races to become public servants. A public servant is defined as any government employee. This definition includes elected officials from the White House down to city government. It also covers those who work in public health, law enforcement, education and many more fields. Employees in all these jobs have certain qualities in common: They are – or at least they should be – devoted to the well-being of the citizens who fall under their care. Tallapoosa Publishers spoke to three former members of city government about the qualities they believe are most important to being a good public servant.

care clinic’s proximity to Wal-Mart is no coincidence. “In any of the communities that have a Super Wal-Mart or a Wal-Mart, we feel like it’s a good fit for us,” said Eskildsen. “Our emphasis is bringing healthcare, urgent care, to rural markets, bringing what we offer to rural locations. We like to be near Wal-Mart, because we feel like that’s usually a convenient place to be.” See URGENT CARE • Page 3

Verciglio brings personal approach to ministry to Alexander City By DAVID GRANGER Staff Writer
Since his graduation from seminary at the Candler School of Theology at Emory University almost a quarter-century ago, John Verciglio has lived the itinerant life of a preacher in the First United Methodist Church. His career has taken him all over north and central Alabama, including Ohatchee, Huntsville (Trinity United Methodist Church), Carbon Hill, Childersburg, Vestavia Hills (Cahaba Heights United Methodist Church), Vestavia Hills and, most recently, Northport, where he was pastor at St. Mark’s United Methodist Church. Sunday will be Verciglio’s third Sunday in the pulpit at First United
Methodist Church of Alexander City. “My first official Sunday here was June 26, but we arrived a little early,” Verciglio said. “Most United Methodist pastors live in parsonages and the church that I was at needed to get in theirs to get ready for the new pastor, so we left a little early and got here a little early. “But we are enjoying Alexander City. We’re doing pretty good, settling in. Just about out of the boxes that contain the stuff that we’ll know we’ll need and ready to send the others to storage.” Verciglio comes to town with his wife of 32 years, Lisa, and his oldest daughter, Catherine.
