NEWS BRIEFS DADEVILLE COUNCIL CALLS SPECIAL MEETING TODAY ON STOPLIGHT ISSUES
The Dadeville City Council will hold a special called meeting Wednesday afternoon at 4 p.m. Dadeville City Clerk Mike Gardner said the meeting has been called to discuss issues the city is experiencing with the traffic light at LaFayette and Broadnax Streets in downtown Dadeville. For much of the last week, the light has been out of operation and has been reduced to a flashing status. The meeting is planned for the boardroom at Dadeville City Hall.
FIVE KILLED MONDAY IN PHENIX CITY CRASH
A two-vehicle crash today, Monday near Phenix City claimed five lives. Carrie Jones, 32, of Albany, Louisiana, was killed when the 2014 Nissan Rogue she was driving collided with a 2006 Mack tractor trailer. Four passengers in the Mazda were killed: Judy Madere, 58; Trudy Hebert, 58; and two children ages 4 and 7, all of Albany, Louisiana. The driver of the Mack was injured and transported to a local hospital. The crash occurred at 8:30 a.m. on U.S. 80 just past the 207-mile marker, approximately 10 miles west of Phenix City. There were no survivors in the Nissan, and all of those killed were pronounced dead at the scene.
Cattlemen searching Alabama’s Best Steak
Polls for the 2016 Alabama’s Best Steak (ABS) contest are open for nominations. The contest is sponsored by the Alabama Cattlemen’s Association and funded through the beef checkoff program. During the first round of the contest, participants are encouraged to submit their nomination for an Alabama steakhouse that serves a ribeye worthy of the title, “Alabama’s Best Steak.” Nominations can be submitted on the Alabama Cattlemen’s Association Facebook page through Sunday, July 31.

Investigators unsure if incident is related to theft allegations By MITCH SNEED Editor
Alexander City Police personnel were called to local church that is the subject of a criminal complaint alleging theft of funds spanning several years Saturday after what is being called an attempted burglary. Detective Commander Lt. James Easterwood said that units responded to Great Bethel Missionary Baptist Church at 692 Jefferson St. in Alexander City Saturday morning. “It appears that someone entered the church office area sometime either late Friday night or early Saturday morning,” Easterwood said. “We are not sure how or when they gained entry, but there was some damage to a window in that area. “They dusted that area for fingerprints and are looking to see what was lifted from the sill of the window. “But as of right now we have not identified a suspect.” Easterwood said that church officials could not identify anything as missing from the area that was accessed. Approximately 50 members of the Benevolent and Protective Order of the Elks from throughout Alabama were on hand Tuesday to celebrate Elks Day at Camp ASCCA in Jackson’s Gap, Camp ASCCA provides a variety of camping experiences for adults and children with disabilities. The Elks, many accompanied by their wives, were treated to tours of the facility before joining approximately 100 campers and several Camp ASCCA staff and volunteers for lunch in the camp’s dining room. In all, Elks from nine different lodges – Alexander
City, Anniston, AuburnOpelika, Bessemer, Cahaba Valley, Calera, Dothan, Mobile and Huntsville – were represented. “Camp ASCCA is our major project,” said Mike Thrasher of Bessemer, the state president of the Elks. “Each state has to have a major project and Camp ASCCA is the one we’ve chosen.” Each year, Thrasher said, the Elks make a $50,000 donation to the camp, most of which, according to Dana Rickman, director of marketing and communications for the camp, is directed toward capital projects. “The Elks have been See ELKS • Page 11
