Council holds vote on candidate qualifications By CARMEN RODGERS Staff Writer

During Monday’s regular city council meeting there was a lot of back-and-forth between members of council concerning candidate qualifications, including residence qualifications. Last week mayoral candidates were asked to submit proof of residency and, after reviewing the information, one councilman raised potential concerns. “The law clearly states that if a question is raised concerning the qualifications of a candidate the deci-

sion thereon should be made by the court,” said Councilman David Stough. “ As we all know, there have been some questions and this city council is not authorized to make that decision.” Immediately following his statement, Stough made a motion to file against a mayoral candidate. “At this time I’d like to make a motion that a declaratory judgment be filed against Jeanna Kervin, candidate for mayor,” he said. Councilman Bill Godwin was quick respond to the motion.

“I’d like to be on record to say that we have reviewed the information that we asked the candidates to turn in. Four out of five candidates have turned the information in. One is out of town and was out of town prior to the memo requesting the information. I feel that we, as a council, should be satisfied with the information we received, regarding residency qualifications.” After Godwin made his comment Councilman Wilson seconded the motion brought forth by Stough. Tallassee city officials may have found themselves in a “Catch 22” with the Land and Water Conservation Fund. Many of the city’s parks, including O’Brien Stadium, were constructed using the Land and Water Conservation Fund. LWCF offers 50/50 matching grants with the understanding that certain governing regulations will apply to these projects. Greg Clark with the Alabama Department of Economic and Community Affairs addressed the mayor and council during Wednesday’s special city council meeting. Clark explained that the city’s Land and Water Conservation Fund projects were undergoing inspection and a “series” of deficiencies have been identified. “Last week we had the opportunity to meet with ADECA’s manager

While summer brings with it a time for relaxation for many, the campus and halls of Tallassee Elementary School are filled with hard work in order to get the school ready for the 2016-17 school year. During the week you can find floors being waxed, carpets being cleaned, AC units being serviced, and walls being painted. For Tallassee Elementary School, those things that come with it are a year round event. “We have been working very hard over the summer. We were able to paint the Pre-K, kindergarten, and 1st grade halls this summer after doing the other half of the school the previous year. Floors are currently
