Dispute over dog leads to fatal shooting By MITCH SNEED Editor

A dispute between two Coosa County men over a dog resulted in a shooting and one man’s death. According to Coosa County Sheriff Terry Wilson, 63-year-old Charlie Hayes of Hidden Valley died late Wednesday evening after he was flown to UAB for treatment of a gunshot wound. Wilson said that they had received a call at 1:22 p.m. about a person having been shot on Coosa County Road 5 in the Hidden Valley Community. Deputies arrived on scene and found Sylacauga Ambulance and Marble Valley Fire first responders rendering assistance to Hayes, Wilson said. The scene was secured by deputies and a preliminary investigation found that there had been a dispute between Hayes and Michael Mitchell, 73, of Marble Valley. “From what we have been able to learn the dispute was over a dog,” Wilson said. “We were told that Hayes believed that Mitchell may have run over his dog and that led to an altercation. Other than that, the men may have known of each other, but were not neighbors or well known to each other. It’s still an active investigation and that’s about all we can release at this time.” Wilson said that no arrest has been made pending completion of the investigation. “All findings will be turned over to the 40th Judicial Circuit District Attorney upon completion of the investigation,” Wilson said.

SL Alabama honors Korean Lunar New Year By CLIFF WILLIAMS Staff Writer

SL Alabama honored its Korean heritage Friday by inviting local officials to its 12th Annual Celebration for the Korean Lunar New Year – Seollal. SL officials welcomed the local dignitaries to their Alexander City plant to take part in some of the traditional customs associated with the Korean holiday and to partake in Korean food. “This is a personal celebration in Korean culture,” SL Alabama President S.C. Kim said. “This is a time to pay respect to our ancestors and celebrate with our family

members.” SL Accounting Manager K. Kim explained that Koreans celebrate family with holiday by honoring ancestors and elders with a ceremony call charye – where often times children get pocket money from elders. President Kim demonstrated the charye in front of food meant to be shared with ancestors as did Lake Martin Area Economic Development Authority’s Don McClellan. Afterwards, everyone enjoyed a meal of bulgogi – a beef and vegetable dish, chicken, and tteok a rice cake along with See TRADITION • Page 3

When Alexander City began collecting an extra half-cent sales tax in 2014 to help fund road projects, officials immediately began setting a plan in place to prepare and used a program called MicroPaver to evaluate roads and plan where the city could get the most bang for its paving buck. Earlier this week City Engineer and Public Works Director Gerard Brewer released the list of projects the department hopes to resurface during 2017, based on that data. Some of the notable projects include Dobbs Road, Campground Road and several small projects around the Broad Street Plaza. “We put a lot of work into loading the data into this See ROADS • Page 3
