Big cat mania is apparently sweeping the area. For the second time in two weeks there has been another reported sighting of a mountain lion or cougar type big cat. Tuesday morning, Opelika-based contractor Allen Schwiening posted on social media that he saw a big cat at about 4 a.m. Tuesday as he was “coming up 280 this morning and I saw one of these on the outskirts of Camp Hill going towards Dadeville. It was standing in the median at the intersection going down the big hill out of Camp Hill where a deer was hit a few days ago, the Facebook post read. Carlice Payne retired from the Birmingham Fire Department in 1988 after 30 years thinking he would lead a quiet retirement on Lake Martin leaving his firefighting days behind. Thirty years later, Payne, now a security officer for The Ridge Homeowners Association would relive those days as he extinguished a blaze in a Ridge home Thursday, Jan. 18 after an out of town homeowner called The Ridge Gatehouse informing him of a potential fire as snow and ice still covered some of the roads and many of the driveways in the development. “I was just in the right place at the right time,â€? the humble Payne said. Payne was in the gatehouse waiting for a shift change at the Lake Martin development when the homeowner called. “She called me and asked me to help them, that they had a fire,â€? Payne recalled. “They knew they had a fire in their house maybe from the cameras.â€? See FIRE • Page 7
