WEATHER DELAYS WORK Officials say March completion is still possible

By MITCH SNEED Editor

Mitch Sneed / The Outlook

Workers were busy Tuesday at the site of the Scott Road Bridge replacement project. Officials say a March or April completion is possible.

Extreme cold temperatures, rain and snow have created some obstacles for contractors working to replace the Scott Road Bridge, but officials hope that they will get a break as they push towards completion of the project. The two massive 12-foot-by-12-foot culverts are in place to span the void. Engineering, Environmental and Forestry Services Company Project Manager Daniel Mayfield said two more concrete portions will need to be poured before

road construction begins. “The weather has given us fits,” Mayfield said. “But we have our fingers crossed that it will get better from here. You need some spans of good weather to get the concrete work done and that’s what we have next.” Mayfield said the wings that span from the culvert opening on one side will be poured as soon as possible. That will leave just the top slab that will be the finished surface of the bridge to be poured. See BRIDGE • Page 3

BACK TO THE FUTURE Tallassee’s Mt. Vernon Theater

Chambers set to honor best of the best

makes a glorious return

Alexander City and Dadeville Chambers plan Thursday events

By CARMEN RODGERS Staff Writer

Downtown Tallassee was full of life Friday as Mt. Vernon Theater footlights went on, illuminating the theater’s first performance in over 50 years. Outside, the lights lit the night sky and classic cars lined the road in front of the historic building. Inside, the newly renovated theater people buzzed about dressed in their best for this momentous night. The smell of popcorn filled the air as people began to fill their seats. The theater was once again open for business. People made their way from around the state and one man made the trip form Missouri to attend the opening of “Dear Mama: Letters and Music from World War II.” James Manning lived in Tallassee as a young boy and at the age of 12 he went to work at the theater. “I used to operate the reels,” he said. The Alexander City Chamber of Commerce and the Dadeville Area Chamber of Commerce will honor members at their annual meetings. “We will be awarding our businessperson of the year, community spirit and lifetime achievements awards,” said Alexander City Chamber of Commerce President Ed Collari. “We will also be recognizing the police officer, firefighter and teacher of the year along with Chamber ambassadors.” This will be the 107th Annual Meeting for the Alexander City Chamber of Commerce and one thing will be a little different. “We are not going to have a speaker this year,” Collari said. “It’s in the

County Director of Student Services Casey Davis said about Monday night’s meeting. “We got a great start with lots of good community support. We were very pleased with that.” During the meetings, Davis said attendees were able to go over the oneto-one initiative handbook and review the acceptable use policy. Members of the tech staff showed off some of the capabilities of the Chromebook, while school administrators explained the distribution procedure for the devices.

“There was a lot of excitement from students and their parents,” Dadeville High School Principal Chris Hand said. “I thought it was a really good meeting.” During the meeting, parents and students were also able to ask questions, though Davis and Hand said there were not that many questions asked during Monday’s meeting at Dadeville. “One question we have been hearing quite a lot from parents is if the students will be hindered See MEETINGS • Page 3
