Leadership Lake Martin Group pens letter explaining reasons The Leadership Lake Martin group that had hoped to address a safety concern and help beautify a downtown alley has withdrew their proposal over the opposition that came from a small group of residents and downtown business owners. Meredith Collari, a member of the Blue team in this session’s Leadership Lake Martin class, withdrew the proposal in a letter to Mayor Jim Nabors, members of the Alexander City City Council and City Attorney Larkin Radney. “When we proposed this, we felt it was a positive step towards making downtown Alexander City safe, vibrant, and more pedestrian friendly,” Collari wrote in the letter “However, with the backlash we have received from a small number of people and the recent threat of a lawsuit from Mitch Gavin, we do not feel this is an initiative we want to be involved in any longer.” The idea was to close the alley between the buildings at 33 Main and 41 Main to vehicular traffic and make it a public walkway with planters and other enhancements that would have created a pedestrian friendly, beautified space. The concept was first introduced as part of the city’s master plan, but has seen similar use with events like Rally In The Alley in recent years. See ALLEY • Page 3
