About 3 inches of snow fell on Tallapoosa County and temperatures dropped steadily as the fluffy white stuff fell Tuesday night and Wednesday morning. The result was a blanket of white powdery snow on top of a sheet of ice on area roads. Roads stayed iced over, even after they had been traveled well into Wednesday and, for the most part, people heeded the warnings and stayed home. The temperatures remained in the 20s and it was not expected to get above freezing until midday today. Alexander City Schools dismissed early Tuesday and were closed Wednesday and today. The same was true for Tallapoosa County Schools. See SNOW • Page 3

During weather and other major events, parents, students and teachers all want the most up to date information to know if school will be open, delayed, dismissing early or closed. In order to achieve this more efficiently, the Alabama Department of Education announced it was rolling out a new online notification system to provide such information as quickly and easily as possible. The new system, which has been in a pilot program accessible only by school officials since April 2017, was demonstrated to the Alabama Board of Education during a Jan. 11 work session. Following this demonstration, it was announced that the notification system would officially go live to the public on Feb. 1. Alabama Department of Education
