STAFF REPORT TPI Staff

By CLIFF WILLIAMS Staff Writer

The Alexander City Board of Education expelled two Alexander City Middle School students for their involvement in a gun incident at the school earlier this month. After a nearly two hour long hearing, Board Member Kelly Waldrop recommended that “Student A” be expelled from Alexander City Schools for a period of one calendar year and Board Member David Sturdivant recommended “Student B” be expelled for the remaining portion of the school year and then be allowed to attend alterative school for the first semester next year. Both expulsions were approved unanimously by the board. Denise Bates who was absent from the meeting having travelled to Washington D.C for the Trump inauguration. Cooper would not comment on the difference in the discipline between the two students other than that is what the board wanted to do. The expulsions stems from a Jan. 10 incident where a gun was discharged in the middle school and no one was injured. “We are very fortunate that the result wasn’t much worse,” Cooper said Jan. ing as she vividly recalls those days. “Each one was very different, but the common thread was the feeling of being a part of government at work,” Benton said. “To me there among the masses you got a special understanding of what ‘We The People’ really means.” Benton’s first trip came in 1997, as Clinton was sworn into office for his second term. The 81-bed, not-for-profit, acute care hospital closed on a $31,178,500 package through Ziegler Financing Corporation last week at a percentage rate that was 1.7 percent lower than what the hospital had previously. According to a release for Ziegler, Russell Medical had approximately $30.1 million in outstanding tax-exempt bond debt with an average interest rate of 5.7 percent.
