Wintry weather in today’s forecast City and county schools take precaution with closures By DONALD CAMPBELL Staff Writer

Winter left its mark in Tallapoosa County in December, bringing a relatively significant snowfall to the area in the weeks before Christmas. Later today, a new winter front will come out of the northwest, bringing plunging temperatures and the potential for snowfall across the county tonight. “The main thing we are looking at right now is that a strong cold front will be coming into the Alexander City area from the northwest, which will bring with it the chance for snow beginning in the 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. range,

meteorologist Nathan Owen with the National Weather Service office in Birmingham said early Monday afternoon. “Right now, we are projecting less than two inches.â€? After the main body of the front moves through, Owen said temperatures will dip into the 20s and even high teens tonight, which will freeze any precipitation on roadways and create serious ice issues. “The main chance for snow will be (today). It should be pretty dry after the front comes through,â€? he said. “The cold will continue throughout Wednesday, with temperatures falling into the high teens again Wednesday night, See WEATHER • Page 3

Imagine getting up early to get a jump start on the day. You start a load of laundry, pick up a throw rug and head to the back door to shake it out. As you stand there at the door, rug in hand, you spot something that you just can’t believe. “I saw something moving and I just stood there and looked,â€? Ellen Dean said. “It was coming closer and then I was able to start to make out the shape it was a big cat, and it was walking up my driveway like it didn’t have a care in the world. “It got closer and it looked just like a See CAT • Page 9
