Council to consider Sportplex bridge grant funds By MITCH SNEED Editor

Due to the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday, the Alexander City City Council will push its meeting back to Tuesday and will consider approval of a funding arrangement through the Alabama Department of Transportation that could be a major boost to safety. The council will consider a resolution authorizing Mayor Jim Nabors to

enter into an agreement with ALDOT for funds through the Alabama Transportation Rehabilitation and Improvement Program. The grant funds that come with a city match will be used to replace a bridge on Sportplex Blvd. inside the city’s largest park. The bridge was part of the park’s original construct, is not as wide as the road leading up to it and is not rated for traffic like buses that often travel through the park. “It’s badly needed,â€? Crews from Alexander City utility divisions worked in November to move water, power and gas lines to help clear the way for the replacement of the bridge inside the Sportplex. The bid was awarded in early December and work could start on replacing the bridge in the middle of next month. Mitch Sneed / The Outlook

According to Alexander City Police Chief Jay Turner, Whetstone, 19, of Alexander City turned himself into the Alexander City Police Department Tuesday. Turner was not able to say much about the incident leading to Whetstone’s charge of statutory rape. “The warrant was for relations with a female under 16 but over 12, Turner said. “The warrant was obtained because of the age. The warrant was signed Dec. 18. Whetstone is no stranger to law enforcement with recent arrests. He was arrested Sept. 10 for possession of a controlled substance posting a $5,000 bond Sept. 20 before being arrested again on drug charges Sept. 25 and was again out on bond when the latest charge was filed. As of Friday afternoon, Whetstone was being held in the Tallapoosa County Jail on a $10,000 bond.

But later this month residents will have an opportunity to witness a trifecta of sorts in spectacular lunar activity. On Jan. 31, a Supermoon (the moon being closer to the earth and appearing larger and brighter than normal), a Blue Moon (the second full moon on the

month) and a Total Lunar Eclipse or a Blood Moon will all converge. According to NASA, the last time the three happened together was 152 years ago on March 31, 1866. Stargazers have dubbed the upcoming event the “Super See MOON • Page 3

Last year’s Polar Plunge with over 350 attendees had much warmer weather as 75 people plunged into the lake water. For today’s event, the temperature is not expected to get over 41 degrees.

Don’t let the weather scare you into staying inside this weekend – there is plenty to do. From numerous events to honor and celebrate the late Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. to the Lake Martin Young Professionals Third Annual Polar Plunge today, there is something for all to get out of the house for. For those worried about the weather, the National Weather Service says today will be sunny with a high of 41 degrees but don’t worry, the water will be a little warmer at 48 degrees at Kowaliga.
