City still weighing Russell Main Office Building options By MITCH SNEED Editor
File / The Outlook
City officials are moving forward on what to do with the former Russell Main Ofice Building. Mayor Jim Nabors said the building is deteriorating every day and that he and other city officials need to make some decisions soon.
Alexander City Mayor Jim Nabors said no decision has been made of the future of the former Russell Main Office Building, but city officials are formulating a plan and gathering data to move forward. The classic red brick building on Lee Street is now owned by the city and sits vacant, and Nabors said its condition is deteriorating every day. “We’ve had people in cleaning it out and
doing some estimates as to what needs to be done to preserve it until we decide what direction we want to go with it,â€? Nabors said last week. “That building means a lot to a lot of people in this community and to have it sitting like it is now is only allowing it to deteriorate further. You know as well as I do that the worst thing you can do to a structure is nothing, so we‘ve got some decisions to make.â€? There have been moisture issues and problems with the electrical, heating and air systems. A portion of the building had been rented out See RUSSELL • Page 3

The Boys & Girls Club of the Lake Martin Area is inviting all area teenagers to the Cooper Rec Center in Alexander City Saturday at 9 a.m. to take part in the first ever Teen Leadership Challenge Conference. The brainchild of Teen Director Crystal Freeman, the conference will feature several guest speakers to help encourage attendees to make positive decisions in life. “I started thinking about trying to do something for our teens,â€? Freeman said. “My initial thought was to have a series of luncheons, one for boys and one for girls, and have guest speakers come and talk to them. As I kept going with this, I decided it would be better to bring them together as one and have the speakers talk to them all.â€? Several guest speakers have been scheduled to See CONFERENCE • Page 3

Post it and they will come. Justin and Kira Woodall decided Thursday morning after months of construction to open the second location of their business, Lake Martin Pizza Co. “I just wanted to open the doors and let the smell permeate out there,â€? Kira said of the way she would like to open the Broad Street location wanting a quiet opening. But her husband had a little different idea. “He (Justin) said we needed to put it out on Facebook,â€?
