Dr. Mark Heinrich, the man who has served as chancellor of the Alabama Community College System since 2012, announced that he plans to retire effective April 1. In the position Heinrich oversaw all of the state’s 24 comprehensive community and technical colleges, as well as Marion Military Institute and the Alabama Technology Network. Included in Heinrich’s duties is oversight of Central Alabama Community College with has a campus here in Alexander City. The man accused of shooting his neighbor to death while he was mowing his grass on a riding lawnmower has been indicted for murder by a Tallapoosa County Grand Jury. Records show that Franklin Nathan Price Jr., 52, of Alexander City was indicted on felony murder charges on Jan. 27. The charges were officially filed Monday, records show. A Ford Expedition received heavy damage in a Wednesday fire. The owner had parked at Piggly Wiggly in Alexander City and went inside to do shopping when a fire broke out under the hood. Alexander City Fire Department and Alexander City Police responded and were able to extinguish the flames. A preliminary investigation showed that the blaze began as a result of an electrical problem near the firewall under the hood. No one was injured.
