Bentley pushes prison plan, pay hike in address By MITCH SNEED Editor

Alabama Gov. Robert Bentley used Tuesday night’s State of the State address to again push for an $800 million bond to help fund construction of four new “super prisons” and asked that state employees be given a 4 percent raise. “Nearly all DOC facilities are double sometimes triple capacity, infrastructure is collapsing and the tensions created among inmates and officers by the deteriorating facilities and overcrowded conditions have even become deadly,” Bentley said. “Alabama is about to embark on a complete transformation of the state’s prison See BENTLEY • Page 11

In 21 years working as a firefighter in Alexander City Interim Fire Chief Reese McAlister has encountered about every problem imaginable, but this week he and the command staff, along with Misty Brown in the city’s IT Department, are making sure one of those issues is a thing of the past. The department is setting up all

of its personnel on an app designed especially for first responders called Active911. The service puts vital information needed on each and every call in the palm of their hands. “When I first heard about it and what it was capable of, it was like ‘where do we sign up,’” McAlister said. “I send a message with an alert to our people that has the address, the nature of the call and even the person’s name.

Councilmember Toby Hanson abstained from the vote. The $4,800 to pay for sick time came up after a 30 minute executive session to discuss potential litigation with attorney Mack Clayton. “This is for John McKelvey,” Blasingame said. “Basically we will pay him for half of his accrued sick time at his hourly rate when he retires
