Three candidates make case for being next city clerk By MITCH SNEED Editor

The community and Alexander City’s elected officials got an opportunity to hear from the three women who are finalists for the city clerk position on Monday evening and each brought something unique to the table. Tamara Jackson who serves as the deputy city clerk/policy analyst in Jackson Mississippi, Wendy McClain who has also served as a city clerk at three cities in Mississippi and Amanda Thomas, a current Alexander City employee in the human resources department answered a series of questions posed by council members. “Again we had three excellent candidates,” said Councilman Eric Brown. “They really gave us something to think about.” Under Alabama open meetings law, since the interviews were handled by a quorum of the council’s members, they must be open to the public. But all three seemed to handle the situation well. Jackson is an attorney and still has a license in Louisiana but no longer practices. She is currently deputy city clerk in Jackson, Mississippi and is in charge of policy analysis. In her current position, she writes ordinances and resolutions and helps set the agenda among other duties. She said it is important to stay abreast of all state laws and to help keep the city and council on the right track and in compliance. “I am very detail oriented,” Jackson said. “I feel like that is overused by some people. I’m the type person who will read it. Then I re-read it and then I will put it down and See INTERVIEW • Page 3

Suspect facing trial for 2014 murder of Auburn football player By MITCH SNEED Editor

Top, Tamara Jackson, middle Wendy McClain, and bottom Wendy McClain were interviewed by the council for the City Clerk position Monday evening.

A 24-year-old Camp Hill man, who is on bond as he awaits trial for a December 2014 murder of an Auburn football player, is now in hot water in Dadeville. According to Dadeville Police Department Assistant Chief Chris Martin, Markale Deandra Hart of Camp Hill was arrested by the Dadeville Police Department Sunday and charged with certain persons forbidden (violent felon) to possess pistol, fourth-degree receiving stolen property, and driving under the influence of alcohol. The arrest stemmed from a traffic stop in which Hart was arrested for DUI and found to be in possession of a loaded 9mm Hart semi-automatic pistol that was reported stolen from a burglary in another jurisdiction. Hart was charged with the murder of 18-yearold Jakell Lenard Mitchell who was a freshman tight end from Opelika. Mitchell suffered multiple gunshot wounds in a shootout at the Tiger Lodge apartment complex of West Longleaf Drive in Auburn in the early morning hours of Dec. 14, 2014. Testimony at a preliminary hearing indicated Hart and cousin Tyrone Rowe were at a party in Auburn and encountered Mitchell there. Rowe testified that Mitchell was angry that Rowe liked a photo of Mitchell’s girlfriend on social media. At the time of the shooting, Hart was on probation after serving six months in jail for a burglary conviction. After his arrest on the murder charge, his probation was revoked and he was sent back to jail. In June 2016, the defense team for Hart filed a motion arguing that Mitchell fired first and sought immunity for Hart from prosecution under Alabama’s stand your ground law. See ARREST • Page 3

Ground will be broken on a new urgent care facility at Russell Medical this summer and a new sign as been put up saying its coming soon. Russell Medical CEO Jim Peace thinks this area will be well served by the new facility and the new primary care physicians it will house. “The board has talked about an urgent care facility for a long, long time,” Peace said earlier this month at the Russell Medical Scrubs breakfast. “We have tried to find the model to operate an urgent care facility and we think we have.” See URGENT • Page 3
