Officials address safety measures for area schools in wake of tragic Parkland, Florida school shooting By MITCH SNEED Editor
When news broke of a deadly school shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida on Feb. 14, local law enforcement and school officials watched as bits and pieces of information were released, they immediately started to review their own notes, plans and guidelines. Superintendent Dr. Darrell Cooper said they began reviewing plans and will spend extended time on procedures when the system’s principals meet today. “We have a lot of safety measures in place as anyone who has visited one of our campuses know,” Cooper said. “We have visitors buzzed in and access limited along with other safeguards. Have a desire to know more about how area first-responders work to help keep Alexander City safe? Here is your opportunity to get an up close and personal look behind the scenes. The Alexander City Police and Fire Departments are accepting applications for the eighth Citizens Public Safety Academy. “It is split between the fire and police departments,” ACPD Capt. James Orr said. “The goal is to give insights to how each department operates.” This academy meets once a week on Tuesday evenings for 10 weeks. The classes will last approximately two hours. While participants aren’t trained to be first-responders, they do get to experience a lot of the same training exercises. “It is not about doing things,” Orr said. “It is about learning the things we do. The Alexander City Board of Education spent part of the time during its monthly meeting to give some special recognition to several students for their achievements, while Superintendent Dr. Darrell Cooper and the principals at each of the city schools took the time to honor the members of the school board for all their hard work and dedication. “It’s a pleasure to work with each and every single one of them,” Cooper said. “They don’t get paid to do this.
