What’s Winn Dixie’s future here? No word from company officials amid reports of potential store closures By CLIFF WILLIAMS Staff Writer
Cliff Williams / The Outlook
It is unknown if the Winn Dixie in Alexander City is one of the the some 200 stores that is rumored to be closing.
While business new outlets are speculating on possible bankruptcy filings by Winn Dixie parent Bi-Lo and Southeastern Grocers and the possible closing of over 200 grocery stores in the southeast, local officials remain optimistic about the Alexander City Winn Dixie. “I have not heard yet if they
are closing the Alex City store,” Alexander City Chamber of Commerce President Ed Collari said. “Hopefully we will get good news and it will stay open.” Bloomberg News reported Monday the large grocery store chain could be seeking court protection as early as next month speculating a move by Amazon to enter the market already with low margins and lots of competition hurting the southeastern grocery
chain. Bi-Lo had previously filed bankruptcy in 2005 and 2009. Collari explained if Winn Dixie were to close in Alexander City it would have large consequences. “It would be a significant hit to the tax base,” Collari said. “It is the primary grocery store in the area. You can see it on any Friday during the lake season. You can see part-timers, weekenders and See STORE • Page 3

CACC to hold open house for technical programs By DONALD CAMPBELL Staff Writer
Faculty and students from the technical programs at Central Alabama Community College will welcome members of the public to campus on Feb. 27 for a Career Technical Education Open House. Running from 4 until 7 p.m., visitors will get the opportunity to get a closer look some of the many programs offered on campus. “February is Career Tech Education Month,” Instructor DJ James said. “We’ve been doing different things to celebrate it. We will be holding an open house on all of our campuses, which will give
people the chance to speak to faculty members, view the labs and see what’s going on. “This is our first time holding a career tech open house. We just want to spread a greater awareness.” “This is a good opportunity for people to come out, talk to us, ask questions and become more comfortable with this,” Dr. Carry DeAtley said. The open house events will be highlighting the welding, machining, electronics, manufacturing, nursing, office administration, computer science, and cosmetology programs the college offers its students. The various labs and facilities will be demonstrating what students in these
programs are involved in doing, while also providing information on job opportunities those who are interested in these fields can take. There will be at least five or six students guiding tours through each lab, explaining what visitors are seeing and answering questions the public may have. “There is a great demand for all of these trades and students trained in these technical education courses,” James said. “The job market is really unlimited.” “This is a college education, it’s just more hands-on,” DeAtley said. “There are more jobs being created for people in these kinds of fields.” See TECHNICAL • Page 3
