Some very important news could be coming to about 1,300 Tallapoosa County residents via registered mail. Tallapoosa County Revenue Commissioner Eva Middlebrooks and her staff have been preparing final delinquent tax notices to property owners who have not paid their taxes. She said those will be sent as registered mail today. Under the current system, property tax bills are sent out in September and are due beginning on Oct. 1 and become late on Jan. 1, Middlebrooks said. “It is about the same number we have every year, but sometimes we feel like a reminder is needed,” Middlebrooks said. “This year there are more than last year. A fire believed to have started in the kitchen area of a Dobbs Road home left the structure heavily damaged, but fortunately no one was home when the fire started and no one was injured. Alexander City Fire Department units were called to 1891 Dobbs Road just before 9 a.m. Thursday when neighbors reported seeing heavy smoke coming from the house. Even though the fire is thought to have started in the rear portion of the split-level brick and siding home, some witnesses reported seeing flames through the front windows before firefighters arrived. Firefighters ran a line about 350 yards to the nearest hydrants,

For the past few weeks, the student body of Radney Elementary School has taken part of its Wednesday to visit the gym and receive a different kind of physical education. Under the guidance of students from the Auburn University School of Nursing, the fifth- and sixthgraders are part of a special pilot program, TigerCHAT, which the university hopes to expand throughout the area and the state. “We’re thrilled to be here every week,” Dr. Linda Gibson-Young from Auburn said. “It allows our nursing students to be involved with teaching fifth- and sixthgraders, educating them on the heart, the lungs and the brain.” The program at Radney began on Jan. 24, with 10 sessions scheduled between See RADNEY • Page 3
