A group of community and business leaders were welcomed Thursday morning as the newests “scrubs” for Russell Medical.

Russell Medical CEO Jim Peace welcomed a new set of community partners Thursday morning – Scrub Partners.

Peace invited several community and business leaders from the area to get information to help support Russell Medical.

“We want to educate our com-

munity leaders of the importance of the community hospital,” Peace said. “If you look around the room you see leaders of this community sitting here today. We are proud that you are here to talk about Russell Medical and find out what it means to this community. There are a lot of things that are happening at Russell Medical and over the last several years. We want to give you the information you need to support

your community hospital.”

Peace presented a video that has become a “manifesto.”

The video highlights the Russell Medical campus much to the delight of Peace.

April 15 and Tax Day is rapidly approaching and some scammers are using the rush of tax season to prey on innocent victims.

Some Alexander City residents have reported what appears to be a scam where callers threaten the resident saying that they owe money to the Internal Revenue Service.

Alexander City Police Interim Police Chief Jay Turner said that residents need to use extreme care when getting solicitations over the phone.

The calls, which in two cases were pre-recorded with a request to call back at another number, said that the return that the resident has recently filed may be “held up due to a previous tax obligation which could result in legal action.”

One resident who did call back after hearing the “robo call” said the person was asking to verify address and social security number. Luckily the resident smelled a rat, hung up and called to report it.

“If they start asking for personal information and start seeking account information, you know they are not legitimate,” Turner said. “The IRS simply doesn’t operate that way.”

Turner said one tool to combat these calls is to tell them to send you some documentation and then you will get in touch

Ask for names, phone numbers and tell the caller you will get back with them, Robinson said.

He said then if there is any doubt, call the IRS. “If you have any doubt or think you may owe, call the IRS,” Turner said. “The number is 1-800-829-1040. You may have to wait a little, but that’s the one way to be sure. If you think you have been a victim, you can also contact the IRS or us here at the police department.”

While no reports have been made locally, the IRS issued a notice that this year citizens elsewhere have reported calls with people claiming to be the IRS saying they are verifying information before mailing out a refund check. The IRS press release says those callers are often just phishing for personal

information for potential identity fraud scams.

The IRS says that any one of these five things is a tell-tale sign of a scam.

The IRS says they will never: • Call to demand immediate payment, nor about taxes owed without first having mailed you a bill.

• Demand that you pay taxes without giving you the opportunity to question or appeal the amount they say you owe.

• Require you to use a specific payment method for your taxes, such as a prepaid debit card.

• Ask for credit or debit card numbers over the phone.

• Threaten to bring in local police or other lawenforcement groups to have you arrested for not paying.

If you get a phone call from someone claiming to be from the IRS and asking for money, here’s what you should do: • If you know you owe

taxes or think you might owe, call the IRS at 1-800-829-1040. The IRS workers can help you with a payment issue.

• If you know you don’t owe taxes or have no reason to believe that you do, report the incident to the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration at 1-800366-4484 or at www. tigta.gov.

You can file a complaint using the FTC Complaint Assistant; choose “Other” and then “Imposter Scams.” If the complaint involves someone impersonating the IRS, include the words “IRS Telephone Scam” in the notes.

Remember, too, the IRS does not use unsolicited email, text messages or any social media to discuss your personal tax issue. For more information on reporting tax scams, go to www.irs.gov and type “scam” in the search box.

something good here,” Windle told Kiwanians. “We are doing great things.

Word is getting around and they want to see what we are doing.”

Thursday, the Dadeville Kiwanis Club ventured to the Camp Hill campus to see for themselves what they are doing.

Windle says they have invited local legislators and businesses like Sajin and SL Alabama too.

Windle explained the center has been open for four years and services students from Dadeville, Horseshoe Bend and Reeltown high schools.

“The first year we were really just getting established,” Windle said. “To be recognized as a career tech center you have to be certified in five programs. We started with law enforcement, pre-engineering and robotics, industrial maintenance, welding, nursing and computer science. Law enforcement has been one of the most popular programs. We have had 41 to 42 students in law enforcement.”

Windle explained that students at the center are finishing school at a higher rate than the other students despite not wanting a traditional education.

“Our graduation rate in the county is 89 percent,” Windle said. “The kids that attend the career tech center they graduate at about 96 percent. It helps keep kids in school that do not see the relevance in traditional classes like algebra 2 or literature. But they will stay in school because they like industrial maintenance

or robotics or welding. They will stay in school to come out here.”

Windle explained that some of the programs at the tech center gets students credits towards graduation.

“We get a math credit for the pre engineering course,” Windle said. “We get a science credit for the forensic science part in the law enforcement course.”

The Kiwanians got to see a demonstration of the Fanuc robot by instructor Dalton Nabors.

“In Intro to robotics we use the 6-Axis Fanuc Robot to get them certified in it, Nabors said. “They can also build robots to compete in the BEST Robotics competition.”

Windle explained that this is the same thing one would see at the local automotive plants.

“This is the same thing you would see at Kia or Hyundai,” Windle said. “Theirs are larger but the prinicipal is the same.

Theirs need to be able to lift large parts like car doors.”

Nabors also explained that in the industrial maintenance program students learn programmable logic controllers, pneumatics and hydraulics.

The tour included a stop in the Microsoft Academy where students can get Microsoft Certified, something Windle says can help students stand out from others.

The other stop on the tour was the welding shop with welding instructor Joe Abercombie.

Peace highlighted a partnership with UAB with the Cancer Center and says that partnership is leading to more things for Russell Medical.

He says the two healthcare organizations are working on more partnerships that will possibly bring more specialists to Russell Medical.

Peace pointed to the future of Russell Medical with plans of an urgent care facility on the campus.

“It will be housed on the hill next to the Cancer Center with visibility from the road,” Peace said. “It will be open seven days a week…We hope to break ground in the next several months.”

Bentley and Strange were both elected in 2010, and often campaigned together as part of a slate of Republicans who swept state elections. After taking office in 2011, Governor Bentley and Strange joined together the forces of the Governor’s Office and The Attorney General’s Office to begin the lengthy process of negotiating a settlement from the unprecedented 2010 BP Oil Spill.

In 2015, Governor Bentley and Strange jointly announced the landmark $2 billion BP settlement.

While most acknowledged that Strange was one of the most qualified possibilities of the more than a dozen people who were interviewed by Bentley, the potential of conflicts surrounding the appointment are present.

The Alabama Attorney General’s Office have been investigating possible misconduct by Bentley to facilitate a relationship with former aide Rebekah Mason. With Strange no longer serving in that capacity, it will be Bentley who will appoint a new attorney general as Strange moves to Washington.

Regardless of those issues, Strange said he was honored to follow in the footsteps of Sessions.

“I am greatly honored and humbled to accept the appointment to Alabama’s Senate seat vacated by Senator Jeff Sessions,” said Strange. “Senator Sessions’ commitment to public service is nearly unparalleled in Alabama his-

“We have come a long ways in four years,” Abercombie said. “We hopefully teach them the ways of the world and hopefully how to weld.”

Abercombie explained that many of the students from the program get hired upon graduation and some go on to further their education.

“We have some students making upwards of $23 to $24 an hour on the road welding,” Abercombie said. “We have some that stay locally and make 13

“We did a community service project at the Horseshoe Bend Football field back in the fall,” Abercombie said. “The maintenance crew built a concrete pad for the wheelchairs and we built the hand rails for that. It turned out real nice.”

The Special Election for the U.S. Senate seat will take place in 2018.

I

t has been a very busy week in Alabama politics.

We had revelations that Gov. Robert Bentley paid the legal fees for former aide Rebekah Mason, the start of the Alabama Legislative General Session, a State of the State address that was filled with projects and few funding solutions, the release of former Gov. Don Siegelman from prison and Alabama’s Jess Sessions was confirmed to be the U.S. Attorney General.

With that list it has no doubt been a busy week.

Then came Thursday’s announcement

by Bentley that he had selected Alabama Attorney General Luther Strange to fill Sessions’ U.S. Senate seat – which served the proverbial cherry on toppy an already nutty sundae.

Before turning to the obvious problems with the appearances of this appointment, let’s just say that Strange has been an effective attorney general, a shrewd politician and one of the most intelligent elected officials that this state has seen over the last decade.

Of those who threw their names in the mix to be considered by Bentley for Sessions seat, Strange was one of the top three, if not the top option and we think he will represent Alabama well in Washington.

But with that said allow us to state the obvious.

Bentley has been dealing with allegations on impropriety over an alleged tawdry relationship with Mason. He has been the subject of impeachment talks. Those talks stalled when Strange and his office that have been bird-dogging corruption across the state announced that they were investigating allegations that included questions about his use of state funds and resources to facilitate his relationship with Mason.

The appointment of Strange to the Senate not only takes the man who is investigating the governor’s actions out of the state, but it allows Bentley to appoint the new attorney general. Wouldn’t you like to appoint the person that would handle a potential criminal investigation of you?

No need to answer that question.

Regardless of the motive behind Strange’s selection, the appearance screams Alabama politics as usual and that’s a shame.

uesday will be Valentine’s Day and it is a day dedicated to love. All those mushy cards will have been picked over, flowers will have been bought and plans made to celebrate the occasion. It’s the only day of the year when red, white and pink become the national colors. Everything about this day is cutesy, sweet and sentimental. It’s enough to make a grown man want to run and hide until it is over.

However, I’ll have to admit that over the years even a tough guy like me has fallen prey to all the hype about remembering that special someone. I’ve given my sweet wife everything from a toaster to a new skinning knife and neither of them were on sale at the time. One Valentine’s Day I even gave her a new washing machine. So, don’t think I’m not a sentimental softie because I still pucker up to cry every time I watch Old Yeller.

By the way, I looked this guy St. Valentine up on the internet I found out he was a priest that lived hundreds of years ago, before greeting cards were ever invented, and that he wasn’t even married. It didn’t even mention that he had a sweetheart. He was just a nice old man that liked people and encouraged family life. He probably liked families because they invited him home for

If he had been a Baptist preacher, instead of a priest, we could have just celebrated by eating a chicken on this day.

Yet, ever since he has stuck all the men with the task of buying cards, candy and flowers while professing undying devotion to their beloved. In the great cosmic scheme of things this old guy gets a chuckle every February watching men scramble around for just the right gift that says, “I love you,” when all he ever wanted was a decent meal and a little fellowship.

I think I’m going to share this historical insight with my wife and then explain that is the reason I’m breaking with the tradition of gifts on Valentines. I can already see her nodding in sage agreement to these logical arguments. When I get through with this objective analysis she will probably thank me for clearing this terrible misunderstanding up. After all, what woman would want flowers when she can have a lecture on the purpose, meaning and

consequences of a holiday?

Yes sir, nothing says “I love you” like a history lesson, The truth is we ought to tell people we love them everyday, and not just on special occasions.

Valentine’s Day is a nice day with all the trappings, but in the real world love ought to be shown in a hundred little ways. A thoughtful compliment, help around the house, a shared laugh, pictures of the children are just a few of those little ways that love is spoken.

God created all of us with a need and capacity for love.

That is why it is so important to tell others that they are loved and have worth.

Those aren’t big words to speak, but they are tremendous words to hear. God gave us the greatest example of love in His Son, so let’s tell others that God loves them, and so do we.

I just got through patiently explaining to my Sweetie my theory of Valentine’s Day and why gifts are not important. I am now hurriedly headed to town to buy some candy while rubbing this knot on my head. I just hope all the cards and flowers aren’t gone!

ince Presidents’ Day is fast approaching, it is appropriate that three of the books I’m currently juggling on my Kindle Fire are “Lady Bird and Lyndon,” “The General Vs. The President” (MacArthur and Truman) and “The Wars of the Roosevelts.”

To my surprise, the upcoming holiday really is still Washington’s Birthday.

Although we’ve been brainwashed into calling it Presidents’ Day for decades, the change was never made official. Similarly, the Tomb of the Unknowns is still technically Sure As Tarnation Looks Like Hiram To Me. Thanks to Smithsonian. com and other websites, I’ve been able to assemble some fascinating presidential trivia for you. Thanks to my anonymous sources, I’ve also been able to ENHANCE that trivia.

For instance, you probably knew that four presidents (Theodore Roosevelt, Woodrow Wilson, Jimmy Carter and Barack Obama) received the Nobel Peace Prize. There were actually SEVEN, but the mainstream media decided not to let the other three know, distracting them with comically large checks from Publishers Clearinghouse.

Eight presidents were born British subjects.

FREE TAX ASSISTANCE: Beginning Jan. 30, free tax and electronic tax filing assistance at Volunteer Connections of Central Alabama, Inc., 5030 Hwy 280, Alex City, AL IRS certified volunteers will provide the free tax assistance and electronically file federal and state income tax forms. The free tax sites are designed to assist seniors 60+ (with no income limit), taxpayers under age 60 with incomes less than $54,000, and disabled taxpayers. At the conclusion of the walk the volunteers will drop filled bags of trash at Dirt Road Gourmet and enjoy a cookout hosted by the Thorntonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s. Lady Wildcats take runner up in area finals Benjamin Russell varsity girls lose to area top seed Opelika

Despite a 78-60 loss to host Opelika in Wednesday’s Class 6, Area 6 Tournament final game, the Lady Wildcats have secured a spot in the upcoming Alabama High School Athletic Association subregionals as area runner up.

According to BRHS varsity girls basketball head coach Latreisha Moon, Wednesday’s loss, which lost the Lady Cats top seed in the subregionals, boils down to the Lady Wildcats’ second-half performance.

“We played really well the first half,” she said. “We had some key turnovers in the second half that cost us dearly.”

Leading the Lady Wildcats in scoring was Benjamin Russell sophomore Jaaliya Caldwell with 20 points. She had help from fellow sophomore LaHope Westbrooks and junior Tayla Stowes with 13 points each.

Wednesday’s loss brings the Lady Wildcats’ season 12-10 overall and 2-3 in the region.

Benjamin Russell’s subregional pairing and location has yet to be determined. However, the contest is set for 7 p.m.

The Dadeville varsity girls had their season cut short Wednesday. In the Class 4A, Area 5 Tournament semifinal game, the Lady Tigers suffered a 48-35 loss to tourney host Elmore County.

Despite the loss, Dadeville varsity girls basketball head coach Pam Holloway was pleased with her team’s performance Wednesday.

“The girls made a lot of improvement as a team leading into the area tournament,” she said. “I was proud of their focus and effort to begin the game.”

But the loss boiled down to basics.

“We missed too many fundamental shots around the basket and allowed Elmore County’s girls to force too many turnovers,” Holloway said.

“The momentum shifted leading into halftime and despite our late efforts, Elmore County continued to be competitive and was able to finish around the basket a lot better.”

Leading the Lady Tigers in scoring was Dadeville junior guard Quanesha Presley with 21 points and six rebounds. She had help from junior center Ranikia Cox with 12 points and 12 rebounds, who was also named to the All-Tournament Team.

With Wednesday’s loss, the Dadeville varsity girls’ season ends 4-13 overall and 4-6 in the region.

Alabama men’s tennis travels to Oklahoma for pair of road matches TUSCALOOSA — The Alabama men’s tennis team will travel to the state of Oklahoma this weekend for a pair of road matches. The Crimson Tide (5-2) begins the week in Stillwater, Okla., today to take on 12th-ranked Oklahoma State at 5 p.m., before traveling to Norman, Okla., on Sunday to face 14th-ranked Oklahoma at 1 p.m.

When Alabama and Oklahoma State face each other today, it will mark the fifth meeting between the two programs, as the Cowboys hold a 4-0 advantage in the series. The last time the two teams competed against each other was during the 2016 season, as the Cowboys won a 4-0 deci-

sion. Oklahoma State won a 4-3 thriller in its lone match last weekend against North Carolina State. The Cowboys currently have an undefeated record at 5-0, and they have three singles players and two doubles teams that are nationally-ranked.

Sunday’s match against Oklahoma marks the eighth meeting between the two programs, as the Sooners hold a 3-4 series lead. The last time the two teams faced each other was during the 2016 season, as the Sooners won a 5-2 decision. The last win the Tide had against Oklahoma was during the 2008 campaign, as it blanked the Sooners, 4-0. Oklahoma defeated Arkansas, 5-2, in its solo contest last weekend.

The Sooners currently have an overall record at 5-1, and they have three singles players and two doubles teams that are nationally-ranked.

Last week, Alabama defeated Texas Tech, 4-3, before topping Clemson in a 5-2 decision.

Tigers open ITA National Team Indoors today

AUBURN – No. 14 Auburn women’s tennis will open up the 2017 ITA National Team Indoor Championships tomorrow against No. 7 Ohio State at 8 a.m., in New Haven, Conn. at the Tennis and Fitness Center of Rocky Hill.

Each team is guaranteed three matches during the

tournament. The winner of this match will face the winner of the No. 5 Oklahoma State/No. 19 Ole Miss match Saturday in the quarterfinals.

Teams eliminated from the main draw will be redrawn for the consolation.

Last time out, the Tigers defeated Illinois, 4-1 and Michigan State, 4-3.

Freshman Taylor Russo earned SEC Freshman of the Week after picking up four combined victories in singles and doubles on the weekend.

Russo leads the team with 17 doubles wins on the season.
