New Site council discwusses gym and water debts By DONALD CAMPBELL Staff Writer
The New Site Town Council discussed the ongoing issue of the New Site Town Gym during Monday night’s meeting, while also talking about a situation with unpaid water debts incurred by some residents throughout town. An engineer from McKee and Associates and an electrical engineer from Gunn and Associates examined the gym building to determine what would need to be done in order to bring the structure up to code. Based on the findings, McKee and Associates drafted a letter to the state fire marshal, recommending the building be classified under the fire code as a practice gym only, rather than being a gym to be used for various assemblies. Gunn and Associates found the facility needed several more emergency exit lights as well as a fire alarm system. “Structurally, there is nothing wrong with the building,” Mayor Phil Blasingame said. “If the state fire marshal approves it (the designation of practice gym), the engineer said he would approve it. This is step one moving forward.” As the town is preparing information for an upcoming audit, Blasingame asked Town Clerk Shelia Fuller to prepare a list of people who were delinquent on their water accounts, some of whom had been renting and left the residence still owing the town money for water. Fuller said she had found some guidelines on how to go about trying to collect these funds. Letters would be going out to some of those with delinquent accounts, while the council would go more in-depth on this matter during a later meeting. The New Site Town Council also handled the following matters during Monday See COUNCIL • Page A3
