Police go back to the beat
ACPD reinforces proven community policing technique through Christmas Eve By MITCH SNEED Editor
Mitch Sneed / The Outlook
Alexander City Police Department officers walk the beat in Broad Street Plaza in downtown Alexander City earlier this week to help deter crime and add security for merchants.
If you have been shopping in or around Alexander City in the last few days, there’s a good chance you have seen a sight from the past – a beat cop. The Alexander City Police Department is again employing a proven community policing technique where officers are taken out of their cars and have them walking in popular retail areas across the city. From downtown sidewalks to shopping centers and big box stores, seeing officers in high-traffic locations is
common these days. The initiative is called “Operation Christmas Traffic” and it’s being welcomed by residents and business owners. Alexander City Police Chief Robinson said the department initiated the practice on Dec. 16 and will have personnel on the beats through Christmas Eve. “The goal is to increase visibility, add security and be on the look out for suspicious activity or to render assistance where needed,” Robinson said. “We have found that shoppers
appreciate it and look to us and the businesses really like the idea of the added security of having officers in the area of their stores.” In addition to being on the beat, the cruisers are strategically positioned to also be very visible. Lt. Randy Walters said the practice is designed to serve several purposes. “The idea is to be visible by being where the people are,” Walters said. “We have their vehicles out in the open as well, making sure they can be seen. “Obviously we are there to help, See POLICE • Page 3

For you non believers, Santa is already in Alexander City visiting with children and adults alike thanks to the help of helpers like Johnny Payne – a job Payne was called to do. “Sometimes those adults want a picture – yea they do,” Payne said as he worked as Santa at USAmeribank Wednesday morning. “I did a bunch of adults last night.” “So you want to have your picture made with Santa Claus?” Payne asked Chelsea Womack as she entered the bank. Womack quickly said “Sure do” “When you sit in Santa Claus’ lap, your boyfriend is going to tell you to go to the North Pole,” Payne said jokingly. “I have an ex-boyfriend,” Womack said as she took a selfie. New Site City Council received a positive report on their financial status following an audit of the 2015-16 fiscal year and solidified information on the status of the New Site Gym. The audit was conducted by Hare and Dunlap CPA Group in Alexander City with Henry Dunlap presenting the overview to the council. “The town continues to be in great financial shape, especially for a town this size,” Dunlap said. “There were no problems with the audit, no fraud, no misappropriation of funds and records are in good shape.” Dunlap noted that the town’s gas tax funds went up about $60,000 while the water fund remained relatively the same.

Lake Levels Local businesses, USPS benefit from holiday e-sales 483.53
By COREY ARWOOD Staff Writer
The Alexander City postmaster said there has been a boom in holiday shipping this season with online sales making up the bulk of a reported 30-percent spike in volume compared to last Christmas. Alexander City Post Office Postmaster Susan Alexander said purchases from e-commerce websites had largely driven the increase. However Alexander said a growing awareness of the services the post office offers, and its competitive prices were also factors. As of Wednesday mail carriers were still busy making multiple trips with deliveries.
Stacks of packages sat waiting in their respective bins in the back of the post office to be moved one step further along their way to wherever their final destination might be. Around 12:30 p.m. a flood of vehicles poured into the parking lot, and inside at least one customer was sending last minute Christmas cards. Behind the blue door that leads into the working area of the post office, two metal receptacles caught hundreds of letters. Scattered throughout could be seen what looked like a number of Christmas cards taking their last-minute trip See SHIPPING • Page 3
