Democrat Jones beats troubled former judge; tax vote fails

Alabama voters did the unexpected Tuesday, electing Democrat Doug Jones to serve in United States Senate. Jones beat embattled former Alabama Supreme Court Judge Roy Moore edging 50 percent to 49 percent at presstime.

While final vote totals were not available, all three major news networks as well as CNN, Fox News and the New York Times had projected Jones as the winner. While there was no victory speech by Jones or concession by Moore as of 9:45 p.m., Jones did tweet out a simple statement. “Thank you Alabama,” Jones Tweeted.

Tuesday’s race was a special election to fill a vacancy in the Senate arising from the resignation of Jeff Sessions to serve as U.S. Attorney General. Jones will serve the remainder of Sessions‘ term, due to end on January 3, 2021. The vote count in Tallapoosa County was overwhelmingly in

The Tallapoosa County Board of Education opened Tuesday night’s meeting with a special moment of recognition for Dadeville Elementary School teacher Jacob Tidwell, while also taking the time to discuss construction at Dadeville Elementary and share concerns with the upcoming school system report cards to be released by the Alabama Board of Education. Judy Owen had put away her 300 Annalee dolls a few years ago after hosting holiday open houses for several years in her home, instead only bringing out a few for the family Christmas

gatherings. Then Owen noticed a contest on the Annalee Facebook page looking for scenes with the dolls. The winner would receive gift cards to the Meredith, New Hampshire doll maker.

Council to consider grant for Lee Street sidewalk project By MITCH SNEED Editor

A potential grant to help fund the constriction of sidewalks along Lee Street will be the subject of a special called meeting of the Alexander City City Council Wednesday. The meeting is set for 4:30 p.m. in the upstairs conference room at city

A man accused of shooting a man to death as he drove down Highway 280 is due in court today at 1:30 p.m. for a preliminary hearing. Nicholas Seth Harrison, 21, of Valley is facing charges of capital murder, reckless endangerment and shooting into an occupied dwelling Harrison or vehicle. Harrison also faces additional charges stemming from a traffic stop in Dadeville that have been merged with the more serious charges. 21-year-old Denzel Pope of Sylacauga died after being shot while traveling in a light gold four-door 1993 Acura Legend on Sept. 19. A doctor who lives in Alexander City has entered a guilty plea to charges relating to allegations that the Montgomery office where he operated served as “pill mill.” On Friday, Dr. Shepherd A.
