Dadeville mayor says changes, new businesses coming By DONALD CAMPBELL Staff Writer
Dadeville Mayor Wayne Smith was the special guest at Thursday’s meeting of the Dadeville Kiwanis Club, talking about the many positive things taking place around town to the members and Key Club students in attendance. “My motto is, ‘Onwards and Upwards,’” he said. His presentation began by talking about the positive changes occurring, including the plans resident Dianna Porter has to enhance Keebler Park and the Creation Plantation, the upcoming groundbreaking Smith ceremony for the new DHR building and other community-wide events. “The soap box derby last Saturday was a rousing success,” he said. “The fall festival on Sept. 23, it’s going to be something.” Smith also discussed several of the meetings he has recently had with representatives of government agencies and businesses looking to possibly set up shop in Dadeville. “There are five spots on the Lafayette Street project left. I met with two representatives from both ALDOT and the contractor recently. We had our meeting in the middle of Lafayette Street, so it was a See DADEVILLE • Page 9

Marking the starting point of their 2018 fundraising campaign, “Team United,” the Lake Martin Area United Way will be hosting a kickoff event at the Betty Carol Graham Technology Center on the Central Alabama Community College campus on Tuesday, Aug. 29. Beginning at 5:30 p.m., the event will feature displays
from all 28 agencies United Way partners with, along with dinner and a special presentation to announce the fundraising goal the organization hopes to meet. “We’ll open at 5:30 so the public can go through the displays set up,” United Way Executive Director Sharon Fuller said. “The presentation will begin at 6.” Those in attendance will be given a card with spaces to mark the displays
they attend. This card will also function as their meal ticket, and will enter the attendee into the drawing for special door prizes to be given away after the presentation, according to Fuller. “In keeping with our theme of ‘Team United,’ we’ll be having a tailgate dinner Tuesday night, with hot dogs, hamburgers and things like that,” she said. Man apparently commits suicide after attempt to serve indictment By MITCH SNEED and CLIFF WILLIAMS Staff Writers
An attempt by Tallapoosa County Sheriff’s Department deputies to serve a grand jury indictment on an identity fraud suspect turned tragic Friday when the man apparently took his own life. According to law enforcement officials, the deputies knocked on the door of a home on Pineview Drive in Alexander City just before noon Friday. A man answered the door and then immediately slammed it. As law enforcement knocked again and called for backup, they reported hearing a gunshot. Alexander City Police Department units and the Alexander City Fire
Department responded. They found the man dead inside with a single gunshot wound, according to reports. Also on the scene were members of the Tallapoosa Narcotics Task Force who helped establish a perimeter. Tallapoosa County Sheriff Jimmy Abbett and Alexander City Police Department Chief Jay Turner said additional details could not be released because it was an active investigation. Neither had any idea what may have led the man to take his own life. “Right now there is nothing to indicate anything other than it was an apparent suicide,” Turner said. “But right now that is about all we know and can release.”
