Judge rules in favor of landfill opponents By MITCH SNEED and CARMEN RODGERS Staff Writers
Five nonprofit organizations, including a local group, earned a victory in a federal court in California this week. The decision could help end years of inaction and force the EPA to act on cases involving pollution in several black communities. The Ashurst Bar/Smith Community Organization is among the plaintiffs who has had complaints pending against the
Stone’s Throw Landfill near Tallassee here in Tallapoosa County. The group has complained residents there have been forced to endure an unbearable smell, noise, vultures, rodents, dust and air pollution and huge trucks speeding down roads in their community. It also believes the air and water pollution have caused increased health problems in addition to the loss of property values and quality of life.
Trucks carrying garbage from around the nation line up at the entrance of Stone’s Throw Landfill to unload tons of garbage at the landfill.

Situated on Highway 22 just past the Daviston Post Office, the Daviston Historical Museum welcomes local residents to come in and take a look, seeing some of the town’s history up close and personal. “We opened up last November 11,” Elaine Dunn with the museum said. “Since then, we’ve had between 200 and 300 visitors come through the museum.” Located in what was once a See MUSEUM • Page 3
Do you have friends on Facebook that you’ve never met? Here is your chance to spend some time with them face to face. The first Alexander City Facebook Social Mixer will be held May 5 at Strand Park from noon until 5 p.m. Rick Durden is one of the organizers of the event and he hopes that people will take this opportunity to get away from the phone or computer screen and come out to talk face to face.
